Description

Encourage the individual to access NHS mental health services, ideally their own GP, as a matter of urgency and help to ensure that this happens – you could go with them if necessary or ensure someone else does.

Please do take a moment to test your tech before joining a session. Make sure that your webcam, microphone and speakers are working so that you can fully participate in the live sessions. Please make sure that you face the camera if you are using more than one screen. If you have not used Zoom before you can access information here At MHFA England, providing support, building confidence and growing a community to drive change is crucial to us. It isn't a footnote or a half-hearted line in the small print. We've spent 15 years generating conversation around workplace mental health, and we understand that being an effective MHFAider® requires learning and support beyond training. MHFAiders who speak other languages and those who are also BBC Embrace members can be found via the spreadsheet in the Useful Documents section.

MHFA Centre

In addition to the course, you will become part of the largest MHFAider® community in England, gaining access to resources, ongoing learning and 24/7 digital support through our MHFAider Support App®, to give you the tools and knowledge you need to carry out the role effectively and confidently, whether that be in your workplace, a volunteer role, or in the community. Course Details Ubuntu 12.04, Mint 17.1, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4, Oracle Linux 6.4, CentOS 6.4, Fedora 21, OpenSUSE 13.2, ArchLinux (64-bit only) MHFAiders® have access to regular online events that provide further learning and support, allowing them to continue to perform their role confidently and effectively, long after receiving their initial training Becoming a MHFAider is a significant commitment - if you’re interested in being trained and supporting your colleagues, you can find out more about the training using the relevant link to the MHFA course. Recognise those that may be experiencing poor mental health and provide them with first-level support and early intervention

In addition, Access Services may be able to provide advice and information to employee and manager about any reasonable adjustments that may need to be considered to support the person’s mental health at work. What is Mental Health First Aid at the BBC? MHFAiders are trained across the BBC to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, to provide initial help in an emergency and guide a person towards appropriate professional help. They are not therapists or medical professionals; they are trained BBC colleagues who can offer immediate assistance in a crisis situation. MHFA was introduced at the BBC in August 2014 and as of March 2018 over 700 BBC staff have been trained. Someone who remains at significant risk of suicide should be under medical supervision and not be at work. However, if the risk has been medically assessed, and an individual does not require medical supervision then working can be a very positive contribution to helping them recover and work may be the best place for them to be.Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders®) are crucial to helping boost employee wellbeing as we adjust to a profoundly changed workplace environment. But while MHFAiders® work to support others, they need support, too. Train as a Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®) and receive three years of certification, plus access to ongoing benefits.

Encourage the individual to access NHS mental health services – this could be their GP or community mental health team (if already engaged with local mental health services) who will know their medical history and be able to direct them to the appropriate service. Signpost to the BBC’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for psychological support (call 0800 042 0140 in UK). Details in Recommended Links. You could help them make the call if needed. And as a result, our course has proven to increase MHFAiders’® confidence in supporting people with mental health issues, meaning they can support your workplace more effectively in the long term. Take the person to a quiet, safe place and help them to calm down. Sometimes listening may be enough. If you are looking to train eight people or more, get in touch with our workplace mental health experts to learn more and to discuss your organisation's requirements:

You have reason to believe that the individual plans to seriously harm themselves or complete suicide, or has taken steps to do so already; this requires urgent action. Following actions advised without delay: Encourage the individual to talk to someone they trust (friend, family member or a mental health helpline such as the Samaritans) and perhaps their manager or HR Helpdesk if they have specific work related concerns. Medium risk Through their training and certification, MHFAiders® become part of a workplace wellbeing community. With access to the MHFAider Support App®, they can access 24/7 digital support, as well as training resources and ongoing learning opportunities.

But while MHFAiders® work to support others, they need support too. It is a crucial part of ensuring that MHFAiders® stay effective, confident and motivated to help their colleagues. MHFAiders® can help organise their roles with reminders and secure conversation journaling, to safely reflect on their work That's why we offer ongoing support to help MHFAiders® feel confident and empowered - long after they've completed their training course. If the individual is on the telephone, try to find out where they are located so you can direct the emergency services if needed. Some suggested action are given below based on the perceived levels of risk the affected individual presents to themselves: Low risk

Organisations

The individual is clearly distressed and requires help but has not mentioned suicidal thoughts or intentions (you can ask the question directly to be sure); you are concerned about their immediate wellbeing. Following actions advised: Computer or laptop with Intel Pentium 4 processor or later that is SSE2 capable and 512 MB of RAM, or a Surface PRO 2 or Surface PRO 3 We strive to create courses and resources that everyone can access.
