Well unfortunately for the narrator, the (NOT) unicorn and pug make it their mission to be accepted into the story by any means/disguises necessary. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. The 6th-century Greek merchant Cosmas Indicopleustes, who travelled to India, believed a unicorn's power was all in its horn: 'When it finds itself pursued and in danger of capture, it throws itself from a precipice and turns so aptly in falling that it receives all the shock upon the horn, and so escapes safe and sound. I wish “Unicorn Not Wanted” had a bit more of a story or would have at least peppered some facts into the pages (in the way “Nibbles” does) because while it was fun and silly, it had little substance.

My 7-year-old has read this with me three times, and she said that it is such a cute and HILARIOUS book. Aunicorn arrives in disguise as a horse on the first pages, but when her hat is removedand her horn exposed, chaos ensues. As well as writing and illustrating his own very silly picture books, Fred has collaborated with some of the best authors of the moment and also works in animation as a character designer. The narrator wants it to be a cowboy and horse story, so the pair try to disguise themselves to fit in and get caught out each time. Elizabeth I was given a unicorn horn by the explorer Martin Frobisher, which he had found washed up on the shore in Northern Canada and later became part of the Crown Jewels and known as the Horn of Windsor.

Unicorn NOT wanted is a playful story that takes lighthearted jab at the current unicorn popularity. Powdered unicorn horn' was sold in pharmacies in London until 1741 as an elixir for aches, pains and ailments. There will be kids who enjoy this and who ask for it on repeat when it comes time to pick a book, but I'm not sure how many. Younger readers may not understand the underlying satire but will appreciate seeing some of their favorite types of characters participate. A unicorn arrives in disguise as a horse on the first pages, but when her hat is removed and her horn exposed, chaos ensues… It’s really silly, but has a positive message of not stereotyping people and being yourself.

The illustrations are just as fun as the story and there will be kids that want this book read over and over and over again.

Unicorns are afraid of Labradors and have been known to attack them, although they become docile around pheasants. He now works mostly in children's books, illustrating several titles for Usborne publishing, amongst others. Unicorn NOT Wanted is a different and funny children's picture book about a unicorn and a Pug who want to join in the story, but the narrator doesn't want them to.
