Description

The book was current with material that I cover in my course. Also the other videos and web content were current and easy to follow. In the antidiabetic chapter only one brand of rapid insulin is shown which may be construed to endorse only one type of rapid insulin. That may be because it was the first one produced in the 1990s. This chapter needs much updating to include the new class of antibiabetic medications such as GLP1s and SGLT2s. Medications are grouped by concept/system it affects and then broken down even further into pharmacological classification in each chapter. Medications are group together by body system they work on, and the pharmacological classifications are appropriately placed.

The layout of the textbook and the chapters is systematic for the learner. I like the strategic design for my style of teaching. Individual drug guides and nursing considerations for the most common medications used in nursing pharmacology: Each chapter starts with a basic concept overview to help the reader better understand the action of medications. Chapters are organized in the same format and includes the same important information for safe medication administration. A glossary is included at the end of each chapter.

The text is comprehensive and at an appropriate level for pre-licensure students. The glossary is excellent, as is the Table of Contents. Take pharmacology as a subject that is easy to learn, and it’s okay if you don’t know everything about medications and their side effect; it is super normal for students who are taking this type of course.

Nurses are also the one who supervises how well the patient is tolerating certain medications. Knowledge of the medications include, knowing its approved drug name and classification, correct dose and route of administration. A medication may have as many as three different names- a chemical name, a generic (proprietary) name and a trade name (Crisp & Taylor, 2011). A chemical name refers to the chemical makeup of a drug, a generic name is the drug name listed in official publications such as the MIMS annual, and the trade name is the name manufacturers have registered the medication as.

Most students find it hard to study pharmacology because of the high dosage of information they need to learn. However, there are some tips on how nursing students can ace their pharmacology course without studying too much and spending too much time memorizing drug names. Make Outlines Topics and sub-topics in the text are present in a uniform manner throughout the book. With in the sub-topics you can also consistently find medication considerations throughout the lifespan.

Easy to navigate, and having the content easily accessible from the web or ebook interface was even more helpful.

There is no need for nursing students to study everything on their own; they can always seek help from other sources – professors, classmates, or even friends – who have the same class with you so that you guys could share ideas and concepts about what was discussed during lecture, instead of going to school/classrooms and listening to unnecessary things again. Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself

I did not find the book to be culturally insensitive. I did not find very much regarding culture specifically in the sections which I reviewed. It is better to research pharmacology after discussing things with your classmates or friends than to learn alone without knowing what you’re learning because you fear that you might get something wrong, leading to failing the course. You can find in-depth online tutorials on youtube about your subject. Nursing Students Should Not Give Up Information, figures, tables were found to be evidenced-based, error-free, and unbiased. Appropriate references are found in each section. Some references used were more than 5 years old which I am sure will be updated. I would recommend referencing the answer keys as well.

The importance of pharmacology in regards to these ethical principles is that it helps the nurse achieve them. For example non- maleficence, the nurse uses their knowledge of pharmacology to safely administer, and monitor actions of the medication. Sound knowledge allows them to do this safely with no harm, and can also coincide with beneficence because the nurse knows they are doing well. For justice and veracity, the nurse maintains fairness and has the duty to tell the truth to the patient about their medications so pharmacology knowledge helps them explain that to the patient.
