Frantic Assembly is the operating name of Frantic Theatre Company Ltd, a Registered Charity, no 1113716. As they enter the final week of her life, the house becomes full with memories of their marriage and their desperation to conceive a child. In Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett's beautifully choreographed production, today and yesterday are in a constant pas de deux with each other.

A specific scene which was empowered by music was the scene where Maggie finds her old high heel shoes in the wardrobe. The performance was conducted in the visceral, physical theatre style which Frantic Assembly is so well accredited for. The powerful poignancy of the piece is further ratcheted up by the presence of their younger selves about to begin their journey into a long but childless marriage.

Her plays include Skinned, Sleeping Around, Splendour (Paines Plough); Tiny Dynamite (Traverse); Tender (Hampstead Theatre);.

Maggie’s death was choreographed very simply, and yet managed to create an extremely sorrowful atmosphere. uk to discuss your individual requirements, and you'll hopefully see our new site and products soon! This costume coordination allowed for Bill to recognise that at times he saw the younger Margaret buried beneath Maggie’s ageing appearance and deteriorating health; the audience see this when the older Bill dances with the memory of his young wife. Using these furnishings for entrances and exits gave the impression of all their memories together being tucked away. There is a deal of clever staging: characters disappearing into wardrobes, coming out of the fridge or emerging like the Kraken from some subterranean time world beneath the bed.

This evoked sympathy from the audience for Maggie, as the shoes were representative of her youth; being unable to walk in them seemed like being unable to relive her youth despite her best efforts and clear sense of nostalgia. However, the differentiating factor in their voices was that while the volume of Margaret’s voice fluctuated depending on the situation, Maggie’s voice was much louder the majority of the time. One aspect of the direction which I found particularly thoughtful was the way that scenes which clearly showed Maggie and Margaret as being the same character, as an obvious choice would’ve been to have them speak some of the same lines or do some of the same actions- however this never happened. Lovesong is the story of one couple, told from two different points in their lives: as young lovers in their twenties and as worldly companions looking back on their relationship from old age. That sometimes bumpy relationship is drawing to a close as Maggie’s increasing and terminal frailty forces the couple into making some drastic preparations.

It had been mentioned earlier that taking too many of these blue pills would consequently end her life, and so having this repetition each time she took one built the tension leading up to her death.

Video projections onto the back wall of the stage featured in some scenes, and often related to the event of conversation that had just taken place. An example of this was when a low level, soft music played in the background and the young couple were lit in a soft spotlight that contrasted against the rest of the blacked-out stage (to represent the night time). An aspect of the set left open to interpretation was the use of the autumn leaves scattered across the stage floor; I believed this was symbolic of decay and time passing.
