Logan is at his very best and is currently that most unusual of characters in a crime novel, that is a man with a nice home, a serious, happy relationship, and no problems with alcohol. MacBride delivers plenty of humour to leaven the dark deeds and weighty issues; McRae’s interactions with colleagues such as DS Steel and DC “Tufty” Quirrel are a particular highlight. It may just be that I’ve been away from him for a while but I felt he’d pulled the recurring characters back a little from the extreme caricaturing that lost me eventually in the earlier books.He takes an aspect of Scottish life or the criminal world and exaggerates it madly, and I always hope that no one outside Scotland thinks our country or our police force are actually like this. Whilst they are clearly bams for the hate/violence done in the name of beliefs it gives you a bit of insight into that frame of mind, utter madness but MacBride helps paint a picture so you can peek behind the curtain most of us genuinely couldn't fathom. He wasn’t completely thick – the boy was great on sci-fi trivia, so if Star Trek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or Battlestar Galactica came up at a pub quiz, he was your man – but actual police work? Hailing from the wonderful Granite City myself I have more than a passing interest in seeing Aberdeen through the eyes of Stuart MacBride. King explains: “You know how the Alt-Right is full of white supremacists, gun nuts, racists, and neo-Nazis?I think it is because I'm not British or Scottish but I just couldn't relate to this book because it was more about politics than anything else. An engrossing read from a master storyteller who is much more than just blood and guts with some laughs. For those who've followed the series from the start, it's smile-inducing to see the ongoing evolution of the McRae-Steel dynamic, from their reversal of police hierarchy to their unusual personal ties.
