Description

Pete Wharmby shares little stories from his life as a, for 30+ years, undiagnosed autistic and honestly, some made me cry, because it's nearly exactly what I went through, written there, on the pages, black on white, and it made me realize even more how the world was never made for us. Considering it’s usually self-taught, it’s often extraordinarily successful and is one of the main reasons why so many autistic people slip through the diagnostic net and only realise they’re neurodivergent much later in life.

This book is a great starting point for people, not autistic and autistic alike, who want to know what life for autistic people can look like. After all, once you know that a student is doodling because it genuinely helps them to concentrate, why would you have a problem with their page of little drawings? He has also been a keynote speaker at NAS conference, as well as going into schools and businesses to champion change. Of dit nu te danken is aan zijn schrijfvaardigheid of aan mijn eigen ervaring als iemand op het spectrum, dat laat ik in het midden.

So if you want to learn how to make life for your Favorite Autistic™ a little less confusing and overwhelming, this is the book. Pete Wharmby is a former English teacher who received an autism diagnosis in his thirties, and who has since emersed himself in the world of autism advocacy. Having read this now that i have my diagnosis, was something, like the way i was like OMG me every few lines of this book was a lot.

Also, I would have appreciated a deeper look at how societal institutions are set up to be harmful to autistic people. At the heart of this is a lack of understanding and awareness of autism itself, and how best to support autistic people. Dzielimy planetę z wieloma osobami autystycznymi, statystyki wskazują, że 1 na 25 osób jest neuroatypowa; a autyzm dotyczy każdej płci i grupy etnicznej.I enjoyed it as memoir and as assorted reflections and observations on the experience of neurodivergence and how it can be made more or less unnecessarily challenging. I understand that this book is written by a man diagnosed with autism so his perspective on neurotypical people is presumptions or guessing at best. Moves which can help attract more autistic staff include job coaching to ensure employees are properly matched with a company and role, neurodiversity training to educate all staff and making reasonable adjustments in the working day to support staff.

Reading this book will only enrich your life, mind and empathy towards others and in this day and age it's a must read for all neurotypical people. The 36-year-old IT consultant from Westminster, Central London, said: “Don’t be afraid to have more openly autistic people in the workforce.

This can cover everything from break-times to deadlines, acceptable sick leave and if you need to bring cake in for your birthday. I wanted to understand how people with autism are different, what it is that sets them apart for a diagnosis and how to manage that in different aspects of their lives, but I find I am still guessing. Only 30 per cent felt comfortable disclosing their disability to HR, which means many do not get the support they need. I wondered if the book could be read a different way - Pete Wharmby made it through school - PE was difficult, a lot of school wasn't, undergraduate and postgraduate English degrees (his abandoned PhD sounded a great topic to me), PGCE, worked as an English teacher in several (but not a red flag number of) schools, including as Head of Department, married and had a child (there seems no suggestion not entirely intentionally) And then, in his mid-30s had a breakdown (which he attributes to the arrival of that baby). To życie w oczekiwaniu na kolejną katastrofę, wskaźniki bezrobocia, bezdomności i samobójstw wśród dorosłych osób autystycznych są koszmarnie wysokie.Pete eloquently and passionately explains the the challenges of having to navigate our round-hole world as a square peg and therefore is a comforting and validating read for anyone who is Untypical. Naar mijn academische mening zou er op het einde van een boek standaard een literatuurlijst moeten zijn, maar hier is dat niet het geval. Pete states that, had it not been for the support he received from the online autistic community, his own outcome may have been far worse. My first difficulty is because I am keenly aware of the existence in the world and especially around autism of those who enjoy, or are compelled to take, contrarian and hypercritical positions, perhaps because any mistakes or disagreements overshadow anything positive, perhaps because of their particular difficulties in generalising from another's experience.
