Volume 1 sets up everything with deep, fascinating character studies and intricate descriptions of the mechanism for the corporate crime around which the plot revolves.

LADY JOKER, VOLUME 2 | Kirkus Reviews

The inner workings of the corporate-criminal world is explored as the Hinode Beer Corporation tries to shed its criminal connections. After their common love of horse racing brings them together, their plan evolves slowly over years of sharing personal details and nursing their common grievance against Hinode’s criminality. King uses the phrase keeping it on the down-low in a way that suggests he probably doesn’t understand how this phrase is currently used—and has been used for quite a while.I can’t allow myself to not finish a book (unless it’s completely terrible) - so I continued to work my way through it although it took way longer than it should have because I just kept getting bored. The unnamed narrator, a struggling fortysomething author, is at JFK waiting for a delayed flight when a chance encounter with a former classmate results in an invitation to the first-class lounge.

One of Japan’s great modern masters, Kaoru Takamura, makes her English-language debut with this two-volume publication of her magnum opus. Like Ellroy’s American Tabloid and Carr’s The Alienist, the book uses crime as a prism to examine dynamic periods of social history . Sections focus on single characters in the all-male cast (the women, so far at least, are mere walk-ons). A slow burn, and a novel that demands much of its readers, but the pay-off is worth it for those who commit. In the ensuing decades, a handful of other people from various walks of life—a pharmacy owner, a police detective, a truck driver, a credit union worker, a lathe operator—experience maladies or observe problems in their loved ones that they blame on the factory. It is the perfect mix of plot and characterisation I both wanted to finish it but also didn’t want it to end. In 1947, 40 employees of Kanagawa’s Hinode Beer factory quit their jobs over serious health problems whose origins they traced to the factory. Admittedly, as noted before, I, a reader outside the culture, cannot appreciate the motivations reported in this work but I trust they are accurate.
