You should plant these less hardy varieties in containers so they can be moved indoors or into a heated greenhouse in winter. Young plants and those growing in containers need regular watering in summer, but mature specimens in the ground are drought tolerant. There are several species of cordyline – most are tender or not fully hardy, so should be kept frost-free or protected over winter. The biology is similar to that of clematis slime flux, although it is thought that in trees the bacteria most usually colonise the plant through the roots. However, here are some steps you can take to deal with this issue if it occurs after other severe winters.

There are several cultivars of this species, including ‘Dark Star’ with reddish leaves, ‘Jive’ that grows like a small tree, and ‘Pink Champagne’ with leaves of green, cream, and pink variegation. You can also supplement this with an extra liquid feed in June and July when they are growing at their strongest.

Whilst they are pretty hardy in our climate, I guess the last couple of winters have been just too much for them to cope with. Though these plants are grown for their architectural foliage, they produce spectacular clusters of white flowers in good summers. On young plants the first flowering is difficult to predict some plants flowering whilst only 30-40cm others waiting until they are well over a metre high, one thing for sure is that once flowered the growing point divides and the plant becomes multi headed, again this is random the Cordyline may divide simply or become a mass of new growth.

To take terminal cuttings you should remove a stem with a terminal bud or growing point at the tip and several buds along the stem. Fruticosa will need to be moved indoors or placed in a heated greenhouse with a minimum temperature of around 15°C. It is wise to add some horticultural grit to improve drainage as these plants do not like to sit in wet soil.During summer large sprays holding hundreds of tiny creamy white very fragrant flowers are produced which develop into hundreds of grey-black seeds.

If you do notice any problems, then check the following section to find out what is affecting your plant and how to deal with it. These plants can be damaged by fluoride, so if you live in an area where the tap water is high in fluoride you should water them with rainwater. They come in a range of sizes, from small plants for summer bedding displays to large stand-alone specimens. Step 1: Take your cutting from a mature plant, selecting a stem that has had at least a year to mature.

It is very showy with wide leaves that can be yellow, orange, black, red, green, and a mix of colors, depending on the variety. When all the leaves are cleared the best thing to do is grab the trunk and feel your way down the trunk until it feels very hard and woody – then cut the top of the Cordyline off. However, as it appears in damaged tissue (caused by frost), it is likely that this area of stem is dead/rotting/dying anyway; and so will need to be removed. The last time we had this problem, I reported a long time ago, I cut them down to below the rot and they grew back from the base.In cold locations, also wrap the main stem with layers of fleece and place a 15cm (6in) layer of mulch, such as bark, over the root area. These sap-sucking insects can cause discolouration and scarring on the leaves as well as generally stunted growth. Cordylines in containers need regular watering during the growing season, but should be kept fairly dry in winter. Despite the exotic appearance of cordylines, they are reasonably hardy and can survive the winter outside in mild areas or sheltered sites outside with winter temperatures down to around -5° C.
