What emerged is a collection of ten uplifting songs which collectively present a snapshot of pan-European music culture - and an album that journeys across the continent, influenced by French chansons, Spanish pop and English sea shanties; evoking scenes stretching from Edgware Road to Hydra Island; and painting pictures of everything from elegant Parisian cafes to drunken tourists in Magaluf to the ghosttown chill of an out-of-season holiday destination. His full length debut on Daptone Records is equal parts raw feeling and elegance and exudes confidence and charm.

Per a press release, the album began coming together in lockdown, which Simonon spent in a Mallorcan fishing village writing music and painting. The album’s opening track and first single ‘Lonely Town’ also vividly depicts an image, one that’s both precise to one specific location and played out across Europe.Written solely by Paul during his Mallorcan sojourn, ‘Lonely Town’ laments the ghost town chill that remains in an out-of-season holiday destination after wealthy expats and tourists depart for the winter. As restrictions lifted, he spread his wings: some days he might spend his time working with local musicians, on others he might busk in front of cafes in Palma. Over the last few months he has disarmed packed rooms of rowdy concert goers, leaving them silent as they hold fast to every syllable sung. Produced by the legendary Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T-Rex, Sparks) with a band made up of Simon Tong (The Verve, The Good, The Bad and The Queen), Sebastian Rochford (Polar Bear, David Byrne, Patti Smith), Dan Donovan (Big Audio Dynamite) and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz…) playing melodica. Galen adds, “What I came to realise pretty early on, is that on many occasions we would finish a song but I’d be left with a niggling feeling.
