So, remember that being right is not as important as being well and happy with someone. Part 4 - Relationships I find the book way too Long and some of the points repeated as nauseam. It could have been a more concise book. I also cannot agree with some of his points, that economic growth will stop. Well maybe that is because 20 years ago when I wanted to go to a trip to Europe, I first needed to go to the Travel agency to book my trip. Then I go the bookshop or library to get the latest Lonely Planet. I prayed then that our hotels would be nice, and the recommended restaurants were actually good. I tried to look for taxis on the street. I needed to plan everything way in advance. Not to mention getting lost all the time with the map provided by the hotel. The author states that regardless of whether or not we have various assets, we will probably feel lonely and unhappy if we don't have good interpersonal relationships. According to Haemin Sumin, looking at your feelings externally for three minutes causes them to begin to slowly transform. In Slowdown: The End of the Great Acceleration – And Why It’s Good for the Planet, the Economy and Our Lives, Danny Dorling, Professor of Geography at Oxford University, takes aim at the customary view that we are living through an era of unprecedented economic and technological acceleration. Instead, Dorling puts forward a profound and humane argument in favour of the inevitability and desirability of deceleration.

Dr. Devon Price once believed that productivity was the best way to measure self-worth. With their non-stop work ethic, they graduated from both college and graduate school early. However, that success came at a cost. Ideally made just as the tide starts going out on a beach with tidal pools or streams, Danny can spend anything up to 9 hours building his Gaudiesque installations, pictured left. The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down is a wise and reflective Buddhist approach to a slower life. These are my favourite books about slowing down and finding a more relaxed way of life, helping to soothe your soul and open your mind to different ways of living. So, it's critical that you focus on being more understanding even in times of adversity. The journey of forgivenessDit boekje zit zo enorm bomvol met levenslessen, ongelooflijk. Het ene spreekt wat meer aan dan het ander, maar iemand anders heeft daar misschien weer meer aan. In part 4 of the book, the author discusses the need to maintain good relationships and how this can be achieved.

De adviezen/overdenkingen zijn gebundeld per onderwerp, zoals gemoedsrust en relaties bijvoorbeeld. Een mooi overdenking aan het begin, en dan allerlei korte stukjes met adviezen en overwegingen. When we begin to live more slowly, we find we have time to look within—space unfolds and allows us to deeply think and reevaluate things. We have time to think about the purpose and meaning within our lives, and naturally, we become more intentional and thoughtful with the decisions we make.” The following chapters cover other facets of our lives. There’s slow food as a reaction against industrial farming, obesity and junk food, in favor of seasonal produce and artisanal production. There are slow cities in Italy and beyond that have cut noise and traffic, and increased green spaces. You can’t have the good without at least sometimes experiencing the bad. The audiobook was easy to listen to though at parts it seemed disjointed, transitioning to several (semi-related) topics in a short span of time, with extended pauses in between. Not sure what the actual book looks like and how the format of spacing and breaks are shown, but maybe that’s how this was accounted for in the audio format. First love is something that can consume our thoughts for days and hours without us having control over it. But even if it results in a broken heart, it's important to keep in mind that feelings come and go. The way we view the world is nothing more than a reflection of what we idealize as the ideal. This idea is based on our life experience and the expectations we place in the situations we've lived and what we see.

Some of Dorling’s most insightful moments are when he pours cold water on the enthusiasm of the technophilic worshippers of Silicon Valley. The reality is that the digital wizardry of the twenty-first century, though certainly impressive and undeniably important, cannot compare with the wave of innovations of the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries known as the Second Industrial Revolution. Termed the ‘special century’ by the historian Robert Gordon, the period 1870-1970 was unique in the scale of its inventiveness, bringing us electrification, modern pharmaceuticals, the internal combustion engine, plastics and urban sanitation, among many others. Dorling is also sceptical regarding the claim that humanity is on the precipice of creating human-level artificial intelligence (AI). Such predictions are by their nature unverifiable, but Dorling seems to be tapping into a recent general re-evaluation of the limits of AI and the extent to which progress in this area has been overhyped. Danny's study of turning tides isn't just the result of a career devoted to statistics and social trends...

While Dorling’s book can be overly optimistic in some of its predictions, the arguments contained in Slowdown are insightful and often highly persuasive. While the terrifying spread of COVID-19 has focused global attention on the short-term effects on the coming months and years in anticipation of climbing death tolls or salvation via a vaccine, Slowdown will refresh readers with a hopeful long-term vision for humanity. The COVID-19 crisis will call for a grand re-evaluation of how we work, how we enjoy leisure and how we reward workers who provide services we consider ‘essential’. Published in the midst of a global pandemic, Dorling’s book is a well-timed forecast that the storm will eventually subside and humankind will advance towards an era of peace and stability for all. The book has eight chapters on various aspects of life from love and friendships to work and aspirations – and how mindfulness can help with them all. Recommended for: anyone interested in how society began to speed up, why that’s not always a good thing and what’s being done about it. Featured quotes: When I started feeling the drag of winter, I began to treat myself like a favored child: with kindness and love. I assumed my needs were reasonable and that my feelings were signals of something important. I kept myself well fed and made sure I was getting enough sleep. I took myself for walks in the fresh air and spent time doing things that soothed me. I asked myself: What is this winter all about? I asked myself: What change is coming?” 5. Slow– Brooke McAlary

In Praise of Slowness is a fascinating look at how speed permeates every facet of our lives – from orgasm-oriented sex to the increased tempo of classical music concerts.
