I think this is the second Anne Rivers Siddons book I ever bought and read (on the strength of how much I enjoyed "Hill Towns"). Many years later I am belatedly revising it and enjoying it afresh.

Now the four aged cronies are gathered together and all they do is drink and reminiscence, while the enigmatic Fig watches and waits with catlike anticipation. The similarities to C. S. Lakin's Innocent Little Crimes begin to arise as the memories become more pointed, jabbing and setting off one friend against the other. The climax comes when Paul, who was supposed to be staying elsewhere, arrives at the eve of the storm. Literally the gloves come off and once again, four women fight their feelings at his presence. An idyllic Island setting with beautiful oceanfront homes and a thrilling murder mystery is the perfect recipe for a good book. Alliances are made and secrets are revealed in Bad Things Happen Here, much like in Outer Banks!It turns out that underneath all the veneer of friendship and affection lay great ugliness. This book really does make you think. While you're feigning affection to me, can you tell that I'm pretending to like you? At the end, the one true friend is the one who would risk your displeasure and her own life to drag you out of the pretend world you mired yourself in. The majority of the novel's action occurred during their college years in the 60's in Alabama. I was taken in by the girls' relationships and the ways their friendships ebbed and flowed. If you loved Sarah Cameron and Kiara’s friendship in Outer Banks, then you should definitely read Start Here. Willa and Taylor spend their summer on a life-changing sailing trip on which they will discover if their friendship is truly worth saving. Neither of them believes their marriage is viable, until Abby decides to forgo her college teaching position to build, and teach in, a one-room schoolhouse on the isolated barrier island town of Nags Head, North Carolina. Her and Graham's unforeseen arrival brings confusion and even outrage to the entire village, especially Ben. Belly is in for an unforgettable summer, just like John B and the rest of the Pogues in Outer Banks. One of my favorite things about OBX is the budding love triangle between Kiara, JJ, and Pope that we can only hope to see more of in season 3. After a rough night when John B is feeling the absence of his father and JJ receives his father's abuse, they come up with a plan to go spearfishing. Unable to convince Kiara and Pope to go with them, they head out on their own, only to end up right next to some Tourons, including the intriguing Savannah who does not quite act like the others and challenges them in a bet. After a storm rolls in, Savannah winds up abandoned by her Touron boyfriend and the three must find shelter in an abandoned lighthouse - where smugglers also decide to ride out the storm. In this life-or-death situation, they'll need to use their wits and their plots to survive the night.
