The game has two game modes, tutorial/scenario or freeform. Tutorial/Scenario mode takes the player through many short games, each with a set goal much like the PC & Mac version. This game mode starts off by teaching the basics of how to play the game and eventually progresses to challenges that have a set time limit and require a certain animal/guest satisfaction level, number of exhibits, etc. Freeform lets players create a zoo free of time restrictions and goals. Zoo Tycoon DS features all of the same animals as the base game of Zoo Tycoon, with the exception of the Triceratops. In addition to the roster however are the Asian Elephant, Kouprey, Onager, and Orangutan, bringing the total roster of the game to 48 different animals.

Many people have had a formatting program on their Ultimate collection discs, causing this particular expansion to be not so popular. Zookeeper Mode is a bit of a step away from the Tycoon formula, but it's a welcome feature because Zoo Tycoon 2 still looks pretty bland in the overview mode. The biggest change and new feature is Zookeeper Mode, which allows the player to enter the enclosure and interact with the animals. It's clear the difficulty is geared towards a younger or more casual audience, and Zoo Tycoon 2 doesn't have a lot of micromanaging to do besides feeding the rhinos, so simulation enthusiasts will probably blast through the game in a couple days. Buying employees for your zoo is important, example, Tour Guides help your guests listen, Maintenance Workers help get rid of the trash and repair a fence and Zookeepers help you feed your animals to satisfy them and clean their poo.

Microsoft released a Zoo Tycoon game for Xbox One and Xbox 360 in 2013 as an Xbox One Launch Title. [4] The graphics and gameplay are somewhat similar to the first Zoo Tycoon game, however, for the DS version, the terrain is in a grid format and does not blend smoothly with other terrain types like they do in the PC and Mac versions. So it's a Tycoon game. Which means it's a game about running whatever the subject is, in this case, a zoo. The Zoo Tycoon series has been around the PC for years, so this isn't anything new.
