Description

Want a primer on trauma? Here it is. Published in 2016, Steve Haines' graphic distillation of what trauma is and how we can mend some of its effects is loaded with wisdom. It's as if Haines was invited into the minds of sages like Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, and Stephen Porges, and drew out the essence of what we need to know.

I was like a kid in a sweet shop in my late twenties. There were so many exciting courses and models to study. Yoga, led to massage, led to shiatsu, led to zen meditation, led to cranial work. Frequently stories of Adverse Childhood Experiences emerge (see https://acestoohigh.com) and the goal is learning to meet complex histories and stay embodied and keep moving. My worldview has been deeply informed by the AIDs epidemic and the activism that emerged in the 80’s and 90’s and continues to this day. In the early days of AIDs dynamics around health advocacy and alternative medicine were life and death realities. Another big shift in me occurred at this time, from hopeful versions of eastern philosophy and energy models, to seeking an evidence base and asking ‘Can you prove that?’

What is trauma? How does it change the way our brains work? And how can we overcome it? When something traumatic happens to us, we dissociate and our bodies shut down their normal processes. This unique comic explains the strange nature of trauma and how it confuses the brain and affects the body. With wonderful artwork, cat and mouse metaphors, essential scientific facts, and a healthy dose of wit, the narrator reveals how trauma resolution involves changing the body's physiology and describes techniques that can achieve this, including Trauma Releasing Exercises that allow the body to shake away tension, safely releasing deep muscular patterns of stress and trauma This book is simplistically informative, and discusses the nuances of chronic pain in a thoughtful and careful tone. It is a well sourced book, and it shows in the content. The mind and the body are inexorably linked, there is no such thing as pure thought. Changes in the brain always result in a change in physiology somewhere in the body.”

#3 Trauma is Really Strange – Steve Haines

I think this book might be even better than the Trauma is Really Strange book... it really challenges you to re-examine your relationship with chronic pain. I also teach and travel all over the world. My main projects are in London, Switzerland, Ireland and Scandinavia. There are two main strands to my teaching; helping therapists developing expertise in touch and presence via ‘biodynamic craniosacral therapy’, and, promoting ‘Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises TRE®’ as a simple, but powerful self-regulation tool.
