In this uneven but oddly absorbing book, Leviton unapologetically reveals what raw honesty looks and feels like. The author was raised in a household he dubs “a little honesty cult,” in which he was encouraged by his parents to always tell the truth, no matter how painful or embarrassing the circumstances. “My parents…argued that children are born honest,” he writes, “that we revel in self-expression until parents, teachers, and friends punish or shame our honesty away.” Leviton divides his journey into three distinct parts, starting with the inevitable conflicts he inspired in other schoolchildren and the rather bizarre “family therapy camp” that would result in his parents’ divorce. Armed with a creative spark, a flair for the ukulele, and an arch sense of humor often misunderstood by others, the author landed in New York City trying to find work as a writer. This middle part is poignant but also quite painful to read, as the author describes his experiences in a relationship with the love of his life at the time, a graphic artist who regularly broke up with him. Eventually, Leviton decided that the only way to break the poisonous cycle of truth that handicapped him in many ways was to learn to lie. “My early lies,” he writes, “were simple attempts to misrepresent myself as normal,” merely pieces of his “experimentation with dishonesty.” Add to these experiences some peculiar drama on the side—e.g., Leviton philosophically arguing with an armed mugger or accidentally inspiring an orgy—and readers will get the literary equivalent of a radio program they stumbled across but can’t turn off, albeit with the edited parts left in this time. The author begins to be purposefully dishonest, in what seems to be a social experiment to determine if this will make more people like him. I expected there to be a little more self-reflection by the end of the book, but the conclusion seems to be that his over-honest approach is superior, and just not appreciated enough by ‘most people’: OMG do we have actual good fat rep?!?! Even a model on the cover who is a beautiful fat model! I'm in heaven! Thank you to the book gods for making this happen! I wish I had this type of novel when I was younger. To Be Honest is a fun, breezy and affirming story about how you #LoveYourBody because #AllBodiesAreGoodBodies. From being fat to openly and happily living as gay, the story immensely surrounds itself with an attitude of acceptance and gave readers a strong message on self-love and importance. “There’s no expiration date on acceptance.” Thank you to NetGalley, MacMillian Children’s Publishing Group – Swoon Reads, Xpresso Book Tours and Maggie Ann Martin for providing me an eARC in exchange for a fair and honest review!Pro: Grace and Savannah were a great team, and I always love a healthy and positive female friendship. Kim tries to impress her new classmates with a lie. She finally realises she has to tell the truth but will it be too late to keep her new friends? It had a lot of side plots going on, most if not all of them highly underdeveloped because there was just not enough time spent in each one of them. This made the book lose depth, and it needed it as it was touching a lot of different sensitive subjects. i always had a fear that life would divide us, but in the end it was us that didn't know how to keep it together. After committing a criminal act, a nameless girl travels the world planting seeds and transforming bleak landscapes to compensate for her misdemeanour.

As a child, Michael was taught the value of extreme honesty. His family had no limits to truth telling. In his family, he grew up believing To Be Honest is an own-voice story about a fat girl named Savannah, who’s learned to love her body regardless of its size. Fat rep is not something we see often in stories, but it’s slowly becoming a little more common, and I think that’s so important, because we’re finally getting to see in YA books that, just because a character is plus-size, doesn’t mean they’re a villain, or a slob, or a bad person. When these factors are absent or ineffective, the organizational conditions compel employees to choose dishonesty and self-interest. To Be Honest is another sharp, witty novel from Maggie Ann Martin, about a spunky heroine who is dealing with very real issues—body image, parental pressure, loneliness, first love, and finding your way—with heart and humor. Libby has been telling the absolute truth since her mama told her, “Tell the truth and shame the devil.” When everyone gets mad at her, she realises there is a right way to tell the truth.

George- The love interest here who also happens to be Grace’s cousin. I knew this guy was going to be a favorite of mine the minute he corrected Savvy for thinking he wasn’t part of the family based on his more Caucasian appearance. George is also blonde, tall, and slender and very much Colombian. George is tutored by Savvy in math & all throughout we see him take a real interest in Savvy. Legit I wish I had a George in my life at 17The book made me reflect on social norms around honesty, and the different ways “most people” use dishonesty to make others comfortable and avoid conflict. It was also interesting to read how this family seemed to accept that being honest all the time means that you should/cannot care what others think of you, yet there are multiple examples in the book of the author and his family seeming to care what other people think of them. Savannah, Who owns her body with pride, she is so comfortable in her skin and frim in her believes, She has issues but facing challenges with high chin is not on of these.

This is the first of two children's books about honesty by Jon Klassen. Bear asks the animals if they have seen his lost, red, pointy hat, but they all deny seeing it. He feels dejected and worries he will never see his hat again. When a deer helps him remember, the bear confronts the guilty animal. Pro: The fat rep was pretty great. Martin really touched on those things, which I think a lot of people, who have never been overweight are not aware of. Your jiggly bits being exposed and touching someone else, not being able to shop in the same store as your thin friend, being made to feel self-conscience when you eat in front of people, being thought of as invisible or "less than", because you don't fit the size-0 beauty standard. disclaimer: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for a review. This is no way impacted my opinions. The funny: At the age of 4, Leviton's grandmother takes this little Jewish boy to see Santa at the mall. After explaining to him that Santa has a magical sleigh and travels around the world leaving presents under everyone's Christmas tree, she has this dubious little boy sit on Santa's lap. When asked what he wants for Christmas, he replies, " 'I'm Jewish.' We humans come hardwired with a deep-seated need to matter. We want to know that our existence has significance. But when that need goes unmet, we default to indulging the counterfeit version of that need: to look like we matter. Savannah is such a wonderful character. She is happy, friendly, funny, and smart. I am OVER the sarcastic, sassy, closed-off girls that are rampant in YA. I want to read about someone that I would actually be friends with! And I want girls to know that they are free to be fun and silly and people will like them! You don't need to be sullen or fluent in biting sarcasm to be interesting! My personal opinion about Michael doesn't much affect my opinion about the book. I thought it was an interesting and entertaining memoir, however I was expecting it to be a bit more humorous than it actually was. The writing was solid and technically good but it comes across as dry and sterile at times. Not what I would expect from a memoir. I wanted to feel more of his personality through the writing, not just the anecdotes.
