Description

The general fighting style of the Willamette Army is described by their utmost defiance. Even when on the losing end — which is their usual situation — they always make sure to kill as many Holnists as possible. In 1950, Pablo Neruda, the famous Chilean poet, is exiled to a small island in Italy for political reasons. His wife accompanies him. On the island, a local, Mario Ruoppolo, is dissatisfied with being a fisherman like his father. Mario looks for other work and is hired as a temporary postman, with Neruda as his only customer. He uses his bicycle to hand deliver Neruda's mail. (The island seems to have no cars). Though poorly educated, the postman eventually befriends Neruda and becomes further influenced by Neruda's political views and poetry.

The diary Gordon loses in the beginning shows up toward the end in the hands of the Holnists, as does its thief. So Much for Stealth: When approaching what he thinks is a bandit hideout, Gordon is trying to do it as silently as possible, looking for each of his steps. The moment he turns his gaze from the ground, he instantly steps on a dry twig. Right after lampshading this very trope. The Postman Always Rings Twice, a play adapted by Andrew Rattenbury, directed by Lucy Bailey and starring Val KilmerMorrison, a farmer who had barely escaped the rape of Greenleaf Town last September, eyed him with the simmering look of a man who had lost everything he loved, and was therefore no longer entirely of this world. The actions of people in the pursuit of love and happiness are sometimes unplanned spontaneous and dangerous. In this story a man comes to town and becomes involved with a married woman. They plan and plot her way out of the marriage, options on the table they want things to be clean. They have a plan, how will it unfold? Will they walk away in each other arms in happiness?

Heroic Neutral: George Powhatan feels he's done his share of fighting before, and it's up to Gordon to persuade him to take on the Holnists. Gordon really tries to believe that cynicism is an answer, treating idealism as a luxury he can't afford. Yet he's genuinely a good person who keeps on doing the right things and eventually proves himself that idealism is all what's left to firmly believe in. A heroic example is used by Gordon with great effect. Each time he finds people distrusting his story about the RUSA or the Postal Service, he makes sure to appoint them as local Post Masters, making them personally part of the system and thus unable to go against it. Properly Paranoid: Gordon blesses his paranoia in the beginning, which prevents the thieves from getting his gun at least. In a post-apocalyptic world in 2013, an unnamed nomad wanders the scattered communities of the Utah flatlands, trading performances of long-forgotten Shakespearean plays for food and water. At one town, the nomad is forced at gunpoint into the ranks of the Holnists, a neo-feudalist militia, and is branded on his shoulder with their symbol, a figure 8. The Holnists, under their leader, General Bethlehem, are the de facto authority in the area, collecting tribute and recruits from local towns. When the nomad escapes, he takes refuge in a long-deceased postman's mail vehicle. The Postman is the dramatically moving saga of a man who rekindled the spirit of America through the power of a dream. This best-selling and award-winning novel (NOMINEE: 1986 Nebula and Hugo Awards; WINNER: Locus and John W. Campbell Memorial Awards for best novel; "Best" from the American Library Association) is widely considered the most universally "accessible" Brin novel, for those who don't normally read SF.
