Anyone looking out from Grays Harbor Community Hospital that rainy Monday would have seen a land of harsh beauty, where forests, mountains, rivers, and a mighty ocean intersected in a magnificent vista. Tree-covered hills surrounded the intersection of three rivers, which fed into the nearby Pacific Ocean. In the center of it all was Aberdeen, the largest city in Grays Harbor County, with a population of 19,000. Immediately to the west was smaller Hoquiam, where Kurt's parents, Don and Wendy, lived in a tiny bungalow. And south across the Chehalis River was Cosmopolis, where his mother's family, the Fradenburgs, were from. On a day when it wasn't raining—which was a rare day in a region that got over 80 inches of precipitation a year—one could see the nine miles to Montesano, where Kurt's grandfather Leland Cobain grew up. It was a small enough world, with so few degrees of separation that Kurt would eventually become Aberdeen's most famous product.

Insightful, painstakingly researched . . . Cross' rendering of Cobain's childhood and family history is fascinating. — The Seattle Weekly Chris Nelson That's just one reason why this book about The Voice of Your Generation is valuable: it's proof that no one is born punk or even cool, but that it's an attitude one accrues by hanging around the right crowd. That's why the real heroines here aren't named Courtney but first girlfriend Tracy Marander and Bikini Kill drummer Tobi Vail, from whom KC learned most of his sexual politics. His teenage friends - you know, people who actually knew him as opposed to those who felt a 'connection' to him through his music - described him as 'the shape of suicide'; the journals he kept diligently from childhood right up to his death are filled with constant thoughts of suicide; his song lyrics are often frequent paeans to feelings of despair and alienation; he wrote (you may spot a bit of a theme here) several suicide notes during the final months of his life. He bought a gun days before his death. Like most first births, Kurt's was a celebrated arrival, both for his parents and for the larger family. He had six aunts and uncles on his mother's side; two uncles on his father's side; and he was the first grandchild for both family trees. These were large families, and when his mother went to print up birth announcements, she used up 50 before she was through the immediate relations. A line in the Aberdeen Daily World's birth column on February 23 noted Kurt's arrival to the rest of the world:"To Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cobain, 2830 1/2 Aberdeen Avenue, Hoquiam, February 20, at Community Hospital, a son."

He lived in Olympia with his girlfriend at the time, Tracy Marander, who supported them both by working in a cafeteria. Cobain didn't have a steady job, so he naturally didn't have a steady income. He usually slept until noon, ate something, and then played the guitar for hours.urn:lcp:heavierthanheave0000cros_m3u0:epub:eaf8a05b-db44-453b-a8e9-62b1810f9f69 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier heavierthanheave0000cros_m3u0 Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t57f29w6v Invoice 1652 Isbn 0786865059 Since this biography was writen based in interviews (Dave Grohl and Kurt's mother notably stayed out), there is a lot of subjectivy here. Sometimes, I think the author took too much liberties in his assumptions. Warmoth, Brian (March 27, 2009). "Exclusive: Marc Forster Shoots Down Kurt Cobain Biopic Rumours". MTV.com . Retrieved September 19, 2023. For the next two years, a homeless Cobain roamed the streets, sleeping in cardboard refrigerator boxes, hallways of old apartment buildings, waiting rooms at community hospitals, garages of friends, and in ten homes of ten different relatives. The shadow of being abandoned by his immediate family always lingered in his heart, and his loneliness grew with each passing day.

In May 1968, when Kurt was fifteen months old, Wendy's fourteen-year-old sister Mari wrote a paper about her nephew for her home economics class. "His mother takes care of him most of the time," Mari wrote. "[She] shows her affection by holding him, giving him praise when he deserves it, and by taking part in many of his activities. He responds to his father in that when he sees his father, he smiles, and he likes his dad to hold him. He makes his wants known by yelling loudly at first, then crying if the first technique doesn't work." Mari recorded that his favorite game was peekaboo, his first tooth appeared at eight months, and his first dozen words were, "coco, momma, dadda, ball, toast, bye-bye, hi, baby, me, love, hot dog, and kittie." When he was seven, Cobain was briefly diagnosed as hyperactive; the singer later claimed that the subsequent three-month Ritalin course prescribed by a local doctor inaugurated his later drug abuse. Cross's portrayal of a shy but prodigiously gifted child, in artistic as well as musical terms, is a joy to read. Cross did a great job allowing readers a glimpse into Cobain’s life and mind. I’m a bigger fan of Nirvana after reading the book. As I read his descrīption of Kurdt in the actual act of suicide, the image of him abandoning family, friends, and millions of adoring fans who had linked their hearts and souls with his caused me to whisper under my breath:

It was clear Cross had much interaction with the Nirvana frontman during his rise to fame but I was eager to find out what kind of relationship he had with Cobain. “Even as his biographer and someone who knew Kurt, I wasn’t his best friend. And I was editor of a music magazine. We were always gonna have the kind of relationship where he was gonna be sort of suspicious. He clearly respected what I did. I had the benefit of a biographer of going through Kurt’s personal effects and things. He kept copies of my magazines and articles that I had done among his stuff. That, I guess, is the ultimate compliment that a music star could pay a journalist. So, I was respected in the world he was in”. Most of you probably have heard of Nirvana, the most memorable band of the 90's, also because the tragedy that ended up the band, but what really stands out for me is the ethereal and timeless music.

Cobain and Hendrix had many things in common- they both were left-handed guitar players, both died at 27, had four-year musical careers and had battled drug addiction. They also both lived in Seattle, a city with one of the most notable music scenes in the world. I asked Cross if he felt enough had been done to honour both men in Seattle. “The answer is no. The city should honour them more. In the UK, they’ve got their blue plaques; we should have something like that here”. Having two children changed the dynamic of the Cobain household, and what little leisure time they had was taken up by visits with family or Don's interest in intramural sports. Don was in a basketball league in winter and played on a baseball team in summer, and much of their social life involved going to games or post-game events. Through sports, the Cobains met and befriended Rod and Dres Herling. "They were good family people, and they did lots of things with their kids," Rod Herling recalled. Compared with other Americans going through the sixties, they were also notably square: At the time no one in their social circle smoked pot, and Don and Wendy rarely drank.Published to coincide with the tenth anniversary of Nirvana's landmark Nevermind album, this is an engaging, comprehensive biography of the group's resident genius, the much-lamented Kurt Cobain. Utilizing more than 400 interviews and Cobain's unpublished diaries, Heavier than Heaven recounts the meteoric rise and sudden descent of the Seattle-based singer. bn.com Nor was Cobain a working-class icon; unlike Bruce Springsteen or Neil Young, he never donned the mantle of labour rights or anti-capitalism. Perhaps he was, more simply, the next-door loser, a self-confessed under-achiever who would rather get stoned on cheap marijuana than chase skirt. Even in his incredible success - which only lasted three years - he galvanised a generation of like-minded outcasts whoalways felt they could, in turn, admire and emulate his musical triumphs. But, quite frankly, this book is portraying Kurt as a bit of a whiny liar to me...and after my tragic experience with THIS Red Hot Chili Peppers book - and my subsequent inability to listen to anymore of their music after attempting to read it - I don't want to risk disliking Kurt and not being able to listen to my favorite Nirvana songs. This enables the reader to ‘see’ the story of Cobain’s life rather than to “read” it. However, the most important thing about the book is that it does help to understand the tragedy of Cobain’s life. Remarkably, the title of the book (as well as the entire book) reveals the major ‘problem’ of Cobain: he was too ‘heavy’ to fit into this world. Work Cited The definitive biography of The Beatles, hailed as "irresistible" by the New York Times, "riveting" by the Boston Globe, and "masterful" by Time.
