We were born of this world and could only make worldly choices. No matter how we mix it with wealth or entertainment or religion, it’s still corruption. Our righteousness was “filthy rags” and worthless ( Isaiah 64:6). Once we are reborn from Heaven, we can make Heavenly choices. We can choose courage over fear, humility over pride, love over hate, integrity over division, peace over chaos, forgiveness over vengeance, generosity over greed, life over death. It was impossible before. Now, with God and His Spirit within us, it is who we are, our new identity, the New Creation ( Galatians 6:15). We have been made free from within (where it matters) to live as Christians (literally, little anointed ones, little Jesuses) on the Earth, to walk with a loving Father Who is Truth, no longer bound to the things that will destroy us, and declare His love and invite others into that freedom full of joy and peace. This quote can be found in the Book of John, chapter 8, verse 32. When read in the context of the original passage, taken here from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible (1989), readers can more easily understand how truth equals freedom: I have much to say about you and much to judge. But the One who sent Me is truthful, and what I have heard from Him, I tell the world.” They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham. Pulpit Commentary Verses 31-59 describe a further conversation, not with the same audience. The words record a vivid conflict between the Lord and the Jews who believed him, who accepted the Messianic claims, but persisted in interpreting them, not by his word, but by their own ideas of the theocratic kingdom, by their privileges as children of Abraham, by their national animosity to their nearest neighbours the Samaritans, by their inability to press behind the veil of his humanity to his Divine nature. Their faith was of the most imperfect kind; but such as it was, it was made manifest to the observation of the apostle, and this throws light upon the fact that, among the many who believed on him, or rather alongside of these, there was a certain section of "the Jews," of the chief rulers and rabbis, who made a definite movement towards him. This doubtless excited the intense enthusiasm of the disciples, who might at once hope and almost expect that Jesus would with open arms accept their homage. But he at once puts this faith of theirs - perhaps ignorantly expressed - to a proof absolutely necessary for the salvation of his hearers. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! Women are always saying, "We can do anything that men can do." But men are not saying, "We can do anything that women can do.” Just as God is known as the personal embodiment of Truth, the Devil is the “father of lies.” His first interaction with humanity led them into action based on a lie, to death, and corrupted the whole of creation with that event. There are two fathers, and we belong to either one or the other. That is where we get our identity. We have all been born in a world corrupted by the father of lies, and in participating and believing those lies, we are bound to what lies produce—fear, pride, sin, hate, and death.
