However, I thought that there were a couple of interesting points in the novel – mainly how Caitlin thinks about the world around her. She capitalises the concepts that she’s trying to learn – including Minding Your Manners, and Looking At The Person. This really helped me to understand her way of seeing the world, and I thought it was done quite well. Finally, what I did not realise is that the central conflict – the death of Caitlin’s brother, Devon – was based upon the Virginia Tech mass school shooting. I…was not expecting this. The way that Erskine drew the community together in their grief was incredibly moving. Making public notifications about sex offenders in a specific area or neighborhood is a blatant example of public exposure and undoubtedly creates feelings of shame for the offender. Prescott’s results then support the hypothesis that using guilt, but not shame, has potential to reduce recidivism. This conclusion is also strongly supported by labeling theory which posits that being labeled a deviant (shaming) will increase the chance for recidivism; 94% of registered sex offenders fear that they will be devalued or discriminated against (Mingus & Burchfield, 2012). Funerals and memorial services can help bring closure following a loved one's death for some people, but not all. Giving or hearing a eulogy memorializing your loved one's life can immensely heal and help with the grieving process.We've been very lonely, but we had it easy. Because death is so heavy - we, too young to know about it, couldn't handle it. After this you and I may end up seeing nothing but suffering, difficulty and ugliness, but if only you'll agree to it, I want for us to go on to more difficult places, happier places, what ever comes, together. I want you to make the decision after you're completely better, so take your time thinking about it. In the mean time, though, don't disappear on me.”

A theme of this book clearly is empathy. Not only does Caitlin have to learn how to feel empathy, but it seems as though the author’s purpose is to make the reader feel empathy for Caitlin. The first person point of view helps us feel empathy for Caitlin. This point of view helps the reader see things as Caitlin sees them. It helps us get an understanding of what someone with Asperger’s would think like. She has an emotions chart that she uses with the counselor to help her recognize people’s emotions. We can see Caitlin try to use this chart when she sees people. For example, Caitlin thought this as she saw a boy sitting alone on the playground, “I wonder why he’s sitting like that. He’s rubbing his eyes so he’s either sleepy or sad. I think those are the only two things it could be.” I know I do not have to think like this; my brain automatically can recognize other people’s emotions. It is interesting to see how Caitlin has to train her brain to do this.Instead of going into great detail, Zusak uses short chapters that feel more like sneak peeks into her life. Additionally, it serves the purpose of joining Liesel, the main character, with the narrator, Death, and allowing them to converse on more equal terms. Kathryn Erskine spent many years as a lawyer before realizing that she'd rather write things that people might actually enjoy reading. What I was really hanging around for, I was trying to feel some kind of good-by. I mean I've left schools and places I didn't even know I was leaving them. I hate that. I don't care if it's a sad good-by or a bad good-by, but when I leave a place I like to know I'm leaving it. If you don't, you feel even worse.”

Can You Actually Get Closure After a Loved One’s Death? Like Harry, readers know that a final meeting between him and Voldemort is coming and that everything will change for him and his friends. As a stand-alone book, this ending would probably be unsatisfactory. But as the penultimate book in the series, it leaves the readers wanting more. Our heroes face an uncertain future. The faculty, of course, did not consist of wizards, although... how did the headmistress know that it was the wee redhead who led the campaign to free the mice from the biology lab?The plot itself is well done. A small community coping with this horrible violence that has entered its once thought serene boundaries. The author shows the effect not only on the family of those murdered and the staff and students at the school, but staff at other schools, neighbours, and a boy who was the cousin of one of the killers. There is fear, disbelief, and togetherness but no anger as they bond to help the community as one, heal. Very-well done.
