DC's grim arbiter of justice, the Spectre, resurfaced in the 1960s for all-new–and sometimes controversial–stories demonstrating the true power of his vengeance. In this omnibus collectingShowcase#60-61 and #64,The Brave and the Bold#72, #75, #116, #180, and #199,The Spectre#1-10,Adventure Comics#431-440,DC Comics Presents#29, andGhosts#97-99, witness former cop Jim Corrigan dish out ghoulish punishments across the DC Universe! In this alternate timeline, Thomas Wayne became Batman after his son was murdered in front of him. The result is a vigilante who manages to top even Bruce Wayne in the brooding and scowling department. Knight of Vengeance showcases a darker, meaner Gotham City that plays perfectly to Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso’s storytelling strengths. Detective Comics has been a staple for the character alongside the mainline Batman book, and James Tynion IV wrote one of its best modern arcs. Also spanning several artists, most notably Eddy Barrows, The Rise and Fall of the Batmen omnibus is an excellent storyline that's also more of a Bat-family epic. Collects Preacher #34-66, Preacher Special: The Story of You-Know-Who, Preacher Special: The Good Old Boys, Preacher Special: One Man’s War, Preacher: Tall in the Saddle, Absolute Preacher Vol. 2, and Absolute Preacher Vol. 3.

The first volume is the biggest highlight. It includes Loeb's writing and a wider team of creatives who capture the best of both worlds when it comes to tone. Whether it's through colorful buddy team-ups or wild multiversal capers, the Superman/Batman collections are choice reads for fans who love seeing Batman and Superman work as allies.A Batman story for mature audiences. Joker has been murdered and Batman is the primary suspect. And only John Constantine to help the World’s Greatest Detective solve this mystery. The Brave and the Bold #94, 102, 149; World's Finest Comics #205; Teen Titans #25–53; Batman Family #6, 8–9 Here's an odd question: Thinking mainly of the Absolute Edition slipcases, do you sit them on the shelf with the spine of the book showing, or the edge of the slipcase showing? Action Comics, Adventures of Superman, Aquaman, Azrael, Batman, Batman: Shadow of the Bat, Booster Gold, Catwoman, Chase, Chronos, Creeper, Detective Comics, The Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Hitman, Impulse, JLA, Legion of Super-Heroes, Legionnaires, Lobo, Martian Manhunter, Nightwing, The Power of Shazam!, Resurrection Man, Robin, Starman, Superboy, Supergirl, Superman, Superman: The Man of Steel, Superman: The Man of Tomorrow, Wonder Woman, Young Justice Collects Superman: Rebirth #1, Superman #1-39, Superman #42-45, Teen Titans #15, Action Comics #975-976, Action Comics #1000, Super Sons #11-12, and Superman Annual #1.

I think it’s fair to say that DC has done a tremendous job reprinting Batman’s Golden Age adventures and a serviceable job on the Bronze Age. Silver Age? Not so much.A few criteria before we get started. This list of essentials is meant to focus on Batman comics that provide a compete, standalone reading experience rather than spotlighting individual issues or long comic runs. They don’t have to have originally been published in graphic novel form, but they do need to be available to read in a single collected edition now. We’re also limiting our focus to stories where Batman himself is the star of the show. Classics like Mad Love and Batgirl: Year One are must-read stories set in the world of Batman, but you won't find them on this list. You certainly don’t need to read Grant Morrison and Howard Porter’s late 90’s JLA as part of your Batman experience, but the first story is a great showcase for Batman, and goes a long way to defining the character’s relation to the Justice League and the DC Universe at large. Collects: Batman #587, Robin #86, Birds of Prey #27, Catwoman #90, Nightwing #53, Detective Comics #754, and Gotham Knights #13
