I have been using Nikon D500 from past one month now. The camera starts warming up in first 30-60 secs from the right side where the thumb is placed. If i allow the camera to keep filming up to 5 mins, it becomes a hot cake from the right side as well as the steel plate/ area below the tilted screen. The D300 underwent a relatively minor refresh with the D300S in 2009, but after that Nikon seemed to abandon the idea, insisting that its D7000-series of enthusiast-focused DSLRs met the needs of the majority of enthusiasts. But in 2016 Nikon relented and, just in time for a summer of European Championship football and the Olympic Games, produced a genuine successor in the shape of the D500, alongside the professional Nikon D5, and with an astonishing set of specifications that are still impressive today. These are all high-speed Nikon DX cameras meant for sports and wildlife photographers. You can see that Nikon steadily improved the resolution, frame rate, and focus system of these cameras as time went by. The D100 through D300s are outdated cameras from 2009 and earlier, and we don’t recommend them any more. Nikon D500 + 500PF @ 500mm, ISO 450, 1/4000, f/5.6 Shutter speeds are available from 1/8000th second to 30 seconds. There’s a Bulb setting for extra long exposures. The camera has a sync speed of 1/250th second and several self-timer modes. The latter include 2, 5, 10, 20 second durations with 1 to 9 exposures at various intervals. In recent years, photographers looking for a truly high-end APS-C DSLR for sports and action shooting have been more or less limited to Canon’s EOS 7D Mark II and perhaps the later EOS 90D. But with the D500, Nikon returned to this sector in fine style, and its combination of superb autofocus, fast continuous shooting and excellent image quality places it very much at the top of the list.

Stepping outside the world of Nikon, one close competitor to the D500 is the 7D Mark II from Canon. However, the D500 has the advantage of being released about 15 months after the 7D Mark II, so it’s undeniably the more advanced camera. Whether you’re capturing a cheetah on the run or the pivotal moment in the X Games, the D500 will get you the shot. And not just any shot. In 2017 I wanted a new charger because the original was doing things that made me feel uncomfortable. Since it was out of warranty and I desired a dual charger that I could use in my car, I bought the item linked below. Nikon’s free SnapBridge app is available for iOS and Android mobile devices and works with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. Set-up is relatively easy and while I’ve occasionally had some problems getting the app to work effectively, it’s generally smooth going. As you might expect, much of the improved capability of the camera centers around sports and high-speed shooting, with significant upgrades to the shooting rate and autofocus system, but there are also major upgrades to the viewfinder, video capabilities and connectivity options which expand its utility beyond one particular niche. Key FeaturesIf I had a few thousand dollars to invest in a kit for sports or wildlife photography, I wouldn’t go with one of the newest mirrorless cameras. Instead, I’d buy a Nikon D500, an older generation 70-200mm f/2.8, and an F-mount supertelephoto. NIKON D500 + Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 @ 200mm, ISO 1250, 1/5000, f/5.6 Nikon D500 Review: Camera Size Comparisons

The issue with 3rd party batteries was different than the issue with the Nikon Li-ion20 variant. When the D500 came out, prior 3rd party batteries did not work at all in the D500 whereas the older Nikon batteries had a shorter half-life (I had an older 3rd party battery that came free with a D7200 which didn't work at all in the D500). The non-Nikon battery manufacturers subsequently modified their design and these batteries now work in the D500. I know because B&H gave me a free non-Nikon battery when I bought my D500 and it works the same as the Li-ion20 variant Nikon battery as far as I can tell. Interestingly enough the Tether Tools power adapter does indicate that it has an internal battery. If so, that could explain how they are able to maintain sufficient power that seems to be required for the D500. This 1.5x crop in particular limits the Nikon’s appeal for filmmakers. Technically it does shoot 4K, but you would probably choose any one of a dozen modern mirrorless cameras in preference to this one for 4K video. Also, it’s best to shoot in aperture priority mode with Auto ISO for wildlife photography. An alternative is to shoot in manual mode with Auto ISO, but that can lead to overexposed photos if you shoot in bright environments, because the Auto ISO won’t be able to go below 100. Nikon D500 + 500mm PF f/5.6 @ 500mm, ISO 3600, 1/400, f/5.6 With the D500 anything moving I use 25-point dynamic-area AF & AF-C. It nails every shot every time. Never before possible with previous Nikon DX bodies.

Nikon D500 review – Autofocus

The Nikon D500 is clearly ahead overall, although the Canon 7D Mark II is still a great camera. If you’re new to both brands, I’d get the D500. However, if you shoot Canon and are considering switching, my recommendation is to hold off. A more natural upgrade for you is a Canon mirrorless body (which also lets you use all your existing lenses, with the Canon EF-EOS R adapter). I paid about the same for it as it sells for now. I really was not looking for more batteries, and was unsure if the ones that came with this charger would even work ... but they do! And I really don't see any difference in performance compared to the two OEM batteries. Nearly two years later all four batteries and charger are still working without any problems. I don't know if you can get them where you are, but I can comfortably recommend this brand. Video resolution4K (UHD) 3,840 x2,160 pixels at 30/25/24fps, Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 pixels at60/50/30/25/24fps Now i own a Nikon D750 as well from past 18 months. The Nikon D750 warms up also but not before 8 mins of shooting video and certainly not while taking stills.

Nikon generally positions its DX cameras as lower-end due to the smaller sensor, but the Nikon D500 is Nikon’s most advanced DX DSLR ever. It has the same autofocus system as the flagship-level Nikon D5, 10 frames per second shooting, dual memory card slots, and a large bufferthat allows you to take 200 images in a burst before the camera slows down. Nikon D500 + 400mm f/2.8 @ ISO 4500, 1/800, f/4.0 Below are comparison shots with the D500 side-by-side with other Nikon DSLR cameras. The images are to scale giving an idea of the relative sizes.Nikon D300s:Announced 2009. 12 megapixels, 7 FPS (8 with grip), 51 autofocus points. First camera in the series to have video That is why I no longer risk 3rd party solutions as the last stage to provide power to my cameras - that last stage is the most important one. Nikon released the much-anticipated D500 for sports and wildlife shooters on January 6, 2016. Thanks to its excellent image quality, proven ergonomics and a superb autofocus system with a huge buffer, the Nikon D500 is a sports and wildlife photographers’ dream come true. More third-party APS-C autofocus lenses for Nikon Z-mount coming soon: TTArtisan 35mm f/1.8, Meike 55mm f/1.4 and Sirui Sniper 23mm+33mm+56mm f/1.2 The D500 has a 3.2-inch 2,359,000-dot screen that’s touch-sensitive. Settings can’t be selected nor the menu navigated by touch, but it’s possible to enter text, set the AF point or scroll through and zoom into images with taps and swipes on the screen. The screen is responsive, but it would be nice to be able to use it a bit more.

The Nikon D500 has a huge menu with hundreds, if not thousands, of possible settings. Where do you even start? As the first Nikon DX-format DSLR to record high-definition 4K/UHD movies in-camera, the D500 offers a whole new level of moviemaking flexibility. But if you have Nikon lenses and are looking for a step-up camera that's a solid performer with great image quality, you can’t go wrong with the Nikon D500. Wear out the mirror mechanism over time? I haven't heard of that being a problem. It may have happened to someone but I haven't heard of it. I think it is significant that camera manufacturers rate the expected lifetime of the shutter mechanism but not the expected lifetime of the mirror mechanism. During normal operation the mirror cycles up and down just as many times as the shutter opens and closes. That manufacturers don't rate the life of the mirror mechanism means they aren't worried about it.
