Pineapple wine. As the story goes, wine consultant Dimitri Tchelistcheff (Andre T.’s son) came to Tedeschi Vineyard and Winery (Hawaii’s first winery, now called Maui Wine) to help fine-tune their French-hybrid varieties. He delighted in their pineapple wine and encouraged the Tedeschi’s to focus on sparkling wines.

Dr. Andrej Svyantek of Montana State University’s Western Agricultural Research Center is one of the people doing wine grape research in Montana. Svyantek says he is excited about the new cultivars being developed for these challenging climates — and what these seedling vines can offer in terms of cold tolerance, disease resistance, and flavor. Thaden officially opened his winery in 2010. Today, Tongue River Winery is still the only commercial winery with a vineyard in eastern Montana. Those who come to Montana to taste our wines are often most familiar with grapes derived from the more common Vitis vinifera vine as opposed to the Vitis riparia varietals grown here. Our wines are thus as honest, wild, and delightfully unexpected as Montana and its abundant landscapes—we’re in the pioneering stage of creating just what a signature Montana wine will become known for. Our Community There are 8 wineries in Montana, often creating their blends using grapes from other regions due to the location and climate in Montana. However, winemakers have started to cultivate hybrid grapes capable of surviving in the area and producing incredible wines. What Grapes Grow In Montana? Chambourcin. A very diverse climate from end-to-end growing everything from French-hybrids like Chambourcin to Vitis vinifera grapes including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Tennessee Farm Winegrowers Alliance The bioavailability of polyphenols is an important element in the evaluation of their biological properties in vivo. Both concentrations tested in this study have been chosen based on a previous study where these concentrations showed non-cytotoxic effect [ 43]. The concentrations of flavonoids (1.5–6 µg/mL) present in the 15 µg/mL of GSE used in our work which have been calculated based on our chemical characterization of this extract [ 25] can be achieved in plasma during supplementation with these extracts. In the case of flavanols they reached plasma concentrations ranging from 1.5 to 2 µg/mL [ 44, 45, 46]. But even as grapes become more feasible crops in Montana, winemakers like Thaden and the McGuires have legislative obstacles to overcome. As it’s written, the Montana Code Annotated presents certain hurdles to in-state winemakers. The bulk of the code was first written in the 1970s and 80s, before cold-hardy hybrid grapes were prominent on the commercial scene, and certainly before Montana had any kind of notable wine presence. What this means is that the code was first written primarily for the distribution and sale of out-of-state wine within Montana. And just because the in-state wine making industry has grown, doesn’t mean the legislation has caught up. White Raven turns out 12 different wines, four of which headline the selection as being entirely Montana made, from “grape to glass,” as manager Nieman says. The four wines, two reds, a rosé and a white, are made using three specific types of grapes grown in vineyards throughout Montana’s small banana belts like Thompson Falls and the Bitterroot Valley. Their nearest producer is Spotted Bear Vineyards off Finley Point on Flathead Lake. If you are planting a bare root plant, you will need to keep the plant refrigerated until you are ready to plant. The grape growers and winery owners certainly sing the praises of the FANTASTIC FIVE and I in turn praise the growers’ and winery owners’ dedication and dogged devotion to their dream of nurturing great grapes destined for great wine. Coming from all walks of life and seasons in life, many of them husband/wife dynamic duos, I was duly impressed with their craft. Because my educational focus is more on the “A.D.” side of the industry – ACTUAL DRINKING, I was delighted to macerate in the “B.C.” angle of wine – BEFORE CONSUMPTION.Our previous in vitro studies show that grape seed extract (GSE) modulates the coagulation process in human plasma [ 25]. Grape seed extract’s action on human plasma resulted in prolongation of blood plasma clotting time (APTT, PT, TT), and a reduction of thrombin-induced plasma polymerization. Additionally, this extract strongly inhibits the amidolytic and proteolytic activity of the main human coagulation enzyme, thrombin [ 26]. Who will harvest our vineyard acres when the time comes? The White Raven Winery Team is hands-on in all aspects of winemaking, and we take pride in being able to engage community volunteers when appropriate. Norton (aka Cynthiana) is a Vitis aestivalis cultivar producing richly colored red wines. Other popular varieties here include Vignoles, Chardonel and Vidal Blanc. Missouri Wine But to continue growing, the industry must overcome persisting environmental and legislative hurdles.

Samples of blood (4.9 mL) were drawn from qualified volunteers using a Sarstedt (Nümbrecht, Germany) closed vacuum system, with S-Monovette ® Needles (0.9 mm/38 mm) in S-Monovette ® tubes. The tube contained 25 μg/mL hirudin anticoagulant (Refludan ®, Schering AG, Berlin, Germany). One of the coldest places in the US for outdoor grape growing specializing in cold climate varieties including Cayuga, St. Croix, Frontenac, Marechal Foch, Corot Noir and Leon Millot. Maine Winery Guild McGuire has trained her palate to be able to taste this nuance — through years of experience in the wine country of Italy, the vineyards of Argentina, and beyond. Today, she uses that expertise in a location that isn’t known for its wine prowess but someday could be — Montana. In August of 2022, White Raven Winery attended the 2nd Annual Montana Wine Festival and took home 1st PLACE in the (red) Vitis vinifera and (white) Vitis vinifera categories, as well as 2nd PLACE in the (red) Vitis riparia category! But artful wine-making means that we’re always watching the horizon.

North American varietals and hardy strains of grape are grown in Big Sky Country to create some of the best wines in the West. Forget what you’ve heard about Napa and Willamette; here are 5 of the best Montana wines that will make you look to the Big Sky for your next bottle. It’s disappointing from the point of view of a producer to have to face a lot of hurdles that other states have already worked through,” Thaden said. If you’ve never heard of Norton, Chambourcin or Marquette, these are special varieties that survive the coldest northeast winters. Cold climate wine varieties are carefully bred, in part, by crossing native US grape species with European grape species. Much of the research and development into these cold-hardy grapes is still in active development at universities, including the University of Minnesota, Purdue and Cornell University.

Montana is a blank slate for vineyard development,” Vogel wrote. “The Montana wine industry can only grow.” Just under 10 wineries exist in Utah and only a few grow their grapes on Utah’s terroir (the others import grapes from California or Idaho). The oldest winery, Castle Creek located in Moab, first planted in 2006 with grapes including Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Of course, because Utah’s most popular religion, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches abstinence, state wineries do not receive much local support. Here is a detailed article on Utah’s surprising wine history. Frontenac produces fruity boisterous reds similar in profile to Merlot. Iowa is home to over 1,300 vineyard acres and more than 100 wineries. Iowa Wine Growers AssociationSkalkaho White Wine Skalkaho White Wine is a German-style white wine made with St. Pepin grapes grown in the alpine valleys of Montana. The result is a wonderful wine in a classic dry Rhine white, pairing wonderfully with light foods or as a crisp, refreshing drink to be shared with friends or enjoyed at any time on its own. The grapes used in White Raven’s Montana wines— Marquette, Frontenac and L’Acadie Blanc— are all cold-hardy varietals originally grown in cold mid-western states and bred to withstand temperatures of 30 below zero. Antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs have been the major players in their clinical setting [ 1, 2]. Although their efficacy is well established, their deleterious, life-threatening side-effects have also been well documented [ 3, 4] which has prompted investigations into natural alternatives. An exploratory trial to identify new anticoagulants and anti-platelets sourced from medicinal plants is worthwhile. Plants are a good source for isolating natural compounds without unfavorable side effects, capable of inhibiting coagulation pathway enzymes and reducing blood platelet activation [ 5, 6, 7]. Epidemiological studies have provided evidence that diets rich in polyphenols, such as flavonoids, protect against vascular dysfunction, promote vascular health and reduce the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases [ 8, 9, 10]. Polyphenol-rich diets have also been shown to have a positive effect on the vascular system, mainly through their effects on platelets and endothelial functions [ 11, 12]. I have said over and over, you’ve got to let the wine be what it is,” Roxann McGuire said. “Montana wines are different. Don’t expect them to be what you’re used to — know that they’re different when you try them and enjoy that they’re lighter and fruitier.” We grow hybrid grapes,” Thaden said. “And we are committed to finding the cultivars [plant varieties produced by selective breeding] that work here, and then experimenting with winemaking techniques to make the best possible wine that can be made with the cultivars that are hardy enough to grow in Montana.”
