Description

This is a strong family drama that focuses entirely on relationships, and some of those are quite interesting. That said, I did actually like the plot and this book would have probably gotten a higher rating if written by a better writer; someone who can develop characters better and leave out an obscene amount of sexist bullshit. James, Erwin (28 October 2010). "Britain's queen of crime: Martina Cole". The Guardian . Retrieved 5 November 2015. A serial killer is in town and the race is on for DCI Kate Burrows. Stop the killer before more innocent girls die... Since her 20s she has suffered from rheumatoid arthritis after breaking both arms as a child. The arthritis has worsened over time, and now makes it painful for her when writing. [16] [17] Books [ edit ]

Additionally, she has appeared on ITV's This Morning, The Crime Thriller Club, The Wright Stuff for Channel 5, ITV's popular daytime show Loose Women, The One Show and two episodes of Pointless Celebrities for BBC One, and a 2004 edition of The Culture Show. The best way to describe it is this story felt very cookie-cutted. The story, the characters, the situations, they were all cookie-cutted. All very tried and tested. While I don't think that this is a bad thing in some books and series, it felt out of place here. And for an author like Martina Cole to use this formula is off. The author really understands her characters and spends a lot of time in their heads. This allows us to understand their motivations, simple as they may be. This is proving to be a tough case for Kate, Children are going missing, It seems their mothers are seen trying to get rid of them. Not sure what anyone else has been reading, but there was no suspense, no drama, and anyone should be able to work out who the perpetrator is by about half way through the book.

Can Kate and her team figure out what is going on, can they get anywhere with such a complex case, when it turns out things really are not as they seem, the case ramps up a level, and finding the answers become a little tougher.

His lover, Jade, has been in the game for longer than Aiden. Mother to his son, calmer of his temper and rage and a force in her own right, Jade knows the truth. She knows that no one is indestructible. Especially in their line of work. Reeva O'Hara has to fight for everything.....she had her first child at 14 and by the time she hits her early twenties she has already produce a further 4 children.I loved Cole's earlier books, particularly Burrows and the whole taboo of a copper hooking up with a criminal. Now Burrows is out of the police business and Pat is mostly retired things are going well when Pat has a chap claiming to be his son. Pat is shrewd and suspicious of course but the idea of a family brings it's own happiness and problems. Cole was born in Essex, England, to Irish Catholic parents, and was the youngest of five children. Her mother was a psychiatric nurse from Glasnevin, County Dublin and her father was a merchant seaman from Cork City. Her cousin is the Cork politician Denis Cregan. She was expelled from her convent school aged 15 after allegedly being caught reading a Harold Robbins novel. [1] [2] With the story taking place within a certain era there's some outdated misogynist language used throughout.

I had to take a break from reading it because I had heard the line ‘he doesn’t suffer fools gladly’ one too many times and it still came up multiple times when I resumed the read. Aiden O'Hara is the oldest, loves his mum but knows she attracts the wrong sort of guys so he has to watch over his family. As with Cole’s previous books, the chapters are fairly short and the style and flow of writing is easy to follow but it’s really just the same old stories and characters.

It's been years since I last read a Martian Cole novel and I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed this dark gritty readable gangster thrillers. Betrayal is purely and simply the everyday story of criminal folk, from 1981 until 2016. They are a large East End family, headed by Reeva, a fiery Irishwoman, who has five sons and one daughter, all by different fathers, and all of mixed blood. a b Shepherd, Robert. "The Broadcast interview: Martina Cole, crime author". www.broadcastnow.co.uk. Media Business Insight . Retrieved 5 November 2015. Martina has the skill of creating characters that drive you crazy. Love and hate are so close in emotion and I felt this a lot with Aidan. I loved the way he fought from a young age to provide for his family as essentially the man of the house, to make a name for himself and ensure that his family was taken care of. What I didn’t like were how the power slowly starts to corrupt him and with that comes unsavoury behaviour towards both his girlfriend and his family.

Excels at school but instead of academics, Aiden is taken under the wing of his mother's boyfriend Tony and is introduced to Eric Palmer a legend in East and South London and a reputation not to mess with.

Martina Cole’s books are typically written from the perspective of a female criminal protagonist. In Goodnight Lady, she tells the tale of a madame with a string of brothels and in Get Even, the wife of a murdered mobster. It is only in herD.I. Burrows seriesthat she has written from the perspective of “Old Bill”. Love Her or Loathe Her?
