in such strength' she replied, 'that he could have been a serious threat, had he not come peacefully'. The story as a whole gives reason as to why there would be greater unity behind Guilliman following the Heresy. It really serves as a prelude to the implementation of the chapters and the scouring, showing the shattered legions becoming used to following him in their efforts to defend the Imperium Secondus. Each of them works as a much more closely united force in small numbers and combines their strengths in ways otherwise rarely seen as divisions of legions. Their willing service to Guilliman is more out of mutual unity than deferring completely to him as their spiritual liege.

Thankfully for us, Unremembered Empire proves to be anything but an excuse to try and have the Ultramarines show off again; and is an excellent novel. Vulkan’s arrival on Macragge brought hope, but he had been driven insane by torture at the hands of his brother Konrad Curze. The arrival of Sanguinius was the last piece of the puzzle, and he was anointed Emperor of Imperium Secundus, with the Lion as Lord Protector and Guilliman as Lord Warden. This triumvirate would rule in the best interests of all, supported by elements from all nine of the loyal Space Marine Legions, who had been brought together by the new beacon that lit the warp.

The Beastmen are an all-new kill team, with 10 models who can be built as Fellgor Warriors or a range of fiendish specialists – including an Ironhorn, a Shaman, a Fluxbray and more. The kit also includes loads of interchangeable heads and horns, for that full custom Chaos experience. Following a formal inspection of the Ultramarines Legion's formidable Macragge Civitas, the capital city of the world, the two Primarchs retired to a private chamber to speak candidly to one another. It was here that Guilliman had created a meeting place for the Emperor and his twenty sons. A long table, carved from stone, dominated the length of the room. Around it were twenty-one chairs, all built for the giant scale of a Primarch. Each one was cut from the same mountain granite as the table. They were taken whether they liked it or not,” Mwavaka said. “They would beat them to submission. When he was killed they shaved his hair and brought it home to us. Only the hair was brought”. Respect has to be given to those that have aided Dan in paving the way up to this novel and also kept him straight with maintaining continuity, but Dan has to take a bow as well. What he has done is produced not just a great book but also opened the door for the next stage of the Horus Heresy series.

And in the meantime, you can experience the rise and fall of Imperium Secundus for yourself in the snappily titled ‘ Imperium Secundus’, a digital collection of 4 novels, 11 short stories and 3 audio dramas that tells the whole tale outlined above in much more detail, as well as exploring more characters and events from the period.Guilliman hesitated to declare the formation of the Imperium Secundus formally and publicly, having admitted his intention to his closest confidences only. He had strength in his conviction of its necessity, but would not shrink from the more unedifying aspects of the proposal. He wasn't bound by the fear that he was usurping the Emperor every bit as much as Horus. In truth, his hesitation was born of grief.
