Description

We finally got to Bri’s story, a fan favorite of the fandom. The witty, eager, cunning and one half of the Twin Eagles. And of course she was no match for Alina (Lina for short) as the princess gets ready to be crowned queen of the western court.

The romance was actually enjoyable until the whole Fated mate nonsense. It's not my cup of tea, the whole idea that there is a predetermined mate for you to fall in love with We got two strong women, a lesbian couple a non-binary character, an interracial couple, and essentially just lots of diversity all throughout. I loved it.

I'm not going to lie, I balled my eyes out during this book, against my will, and I even tried to not cry, but god damn, especially towards the end. All of these characters have wormed their way into my frozen heart and are here to stay. As to the world we are in, there are different kinds of witches – Brown, Green, Blue, Red, and the mysterious Purple wishes who are thought extinct. Brown witches heal, Green witches often work with herbs, etc., to cook amazing foods, Blue witches have visions and can see the future, and Red witches have almost a telekinesis power. The red witches have been hunted for years because of previous politics, and court intrigue (see “The High Mountain Court”), but this practice is finally coming to end – much to the witch hunter’s anger. The magic system within the novels is well thought out, and we slowly discover pieces of it in each book. For each court, as we are placed within that world, we get to see more of a certain kind of witch and how they practice. throwing a few content warnings out there — there is some degree of infidelity in this book, and also a brief situation re: domestic violence. MC and love interest going on a perilous journey first to play the role of nonchalant prince and his 'plaything' where she has to *gasp* sit in his lap and pretend they're acting and then go climb a mountain to find a magical item which just happens to be in the middle of a lake with some scary monsters

I absolutely loved getting to know Bri more and learning more about her history. There is so much more to her than the tough warrior exterior that she presents to the world. We already know that she has so much love for her friends and family, but we also get to see her vulnerable side and facing her fears in a new relationship. This book has a sapphic romance with some spicy scenes and A.K. is always so good about being inclusive.

See a Problem?

THE HIGH MOUNTAIN COURT is the first book in A.K. Mulford’s fantasy romance series, THE FIVE CROWNS OF OKRITH. It is also the author’s debut book. I like the author’s creative take on witches, especially how they are distinguished by color, and each caste has their own specialty. The story lagged in places, especially close to the end, but I understand the author needed the time to set up the way her world worked. I must admit that I do like the side characters Talhan and Briata. They made the story funny and entertaining. Bri wants to solve the queen’s murder as fast as possible because of the prophesy that was made when she was born, she is going to try and change it. Yet even as she’s drawn to him, can she really trust Prince Hale? Can her fallen court truly be rescued from the evil clutches of the Northern Court King?

Boh. Never let anyone else tell you who you are, Remy, even me. No one decides how bright you shine but you.” In this book there are fae, witches, and humans. Years ago The High Mountain Court, where the red witches called home, was destroyed by the Northern Court. Red witches that were killed went into hiding and were hunted down by witch hunters. For thirteen years, nineteen-year-old Remy has known she is possibly the last red witch alive, and she is determined to stay that way. But the Northern Court King, who has slaughtered her family and placed a bounty on red witch heads, is intent on destroying her kind once and for all.

We follow Bri to the Western Court as she has been asked to protect the princess in the place of her friend and to investigate the murder of the Western Court queen.Ultimately, this book has too many sprinkles of everything, and sometimes it's best to just focus properly on a few aspects instead of stuffing the same book with everything.
