Description

The ability to control the Sky+HD box in real time is a useful asset but most people in practice are likely to continue to use their standard remote for this. The Cons Enhanced Flexibility: By using a Sky Wireless Connector, you gain the flexibility to place your Sky box anywhere in your home, as long as it’s within the range of your Wi-Fi network. This allows you to position your TV and Sky box in the most convenient and aesthetically pleasing location, without being limited by the location of your router.

The Sky Wireless Connector is a device that allows you to connect your Sky box to your home’s wireless network. It enables you to access on-demand services, such as catch-up TV, Sky Store, and Sky Box Sets, without the need for a physical Ethernet cable. The wireless connector essentially turns your Sky box into a wireless device, giving you the flexibility to position it anywhere in your home where you can get a good wireless signal. You need to connect your main Sky Q box to your Hub properly. To ensure there’s a connection, go to Settings, Network, Setup and select Reset and then Confirm. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up your main box, connecting it via the WPS buttons on the router and Sky Q box: press the WPS button on the router for a couple of seconds, and then press the WPS button on the Sky Q box for a couple of seconds (it’s the button on the far right). It is important to note that the effectiveness of the Sky Wireless Connector’s wireless connection may vary depending on factors such as the distance between the Sky box and the router, the presence of physical obstacles, and the overall strength of your Wi-Fi signal. However, with a strong and stable Wi-Fi network, the Sky Wireless Connector can deliver reliable and high-quality performance. Benefits of Using a Sky Wireless Connector One common problem is that people split the wireless networks, using the option in the Sky Q Hub’s networking settings, so that they can physically choose which network to join: the 5GHz network has less range, but is considerably faster. However, doing this causes problems, as it breaks down the mesh network and can force Sky Q Mini boxes to connect via 2.4GHz networks. For a stable system, you have to use the default settings.

The main Sky Q box connects to a wideband LNB using two separate coax cables (or one cable for dSCR systems). Unlike previous Sky systems, there is no switching at the LNB. As a result, the same connections can be used to feed multiple satellite tuners, eliminating the need for separate satellite connections for each Sky box. There’s a good chance that the Sky Q Booster isn’t workingif you’ve made other network changes. To fix this, press and hold the reset button on the rear until the power LED starts to flash. Wait until the wireless LED turns a solid green, then press and hold the WPS button (far right) on your Sky Q box until it flashes amber. Now, press and hold the WPS button on the Booster until it flashes amber. When the connected light turns on, your Booster is ready to go. Make sure the Booster is where the engineer located it.

5GHz Mesh Network

Instead, type 001, then press Select. This brings up the hidden engineer’s system menu. Go to Network, and then you can change the 5GHz Wi-Fi channel width, selecting from: 80MHz / ch36 (default); 40MHz / ch. 36; and 40Mhz / ch.44. It’s worth trying all three to see if it makes a difference. If you’ve got the Sky Q Hub, your router also acts as part of the mesh network, and you get an additional feature: your Mini boxes act as Wi-Fi hotspots, repeating the same network name around your house and improving coverage. With this system, both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks have the same name. Before we delve into the details, let’s briefly discuss how the Sky Q wireless connection works between the main Sky Q box and the mini-boxes. It’s a little harder to tell if your Sky Q Mini box is connected to the mesh network, as viewing the network settings will just show you that it’s connected to your home’s 2.4GHz network. So, the easiest option is to go to Settings, Network, Setup and select the Reset option and then select Confirm.

By using a Sky Wireless Connector, you can enjoy seamless and convenient access to on-demand content, including catch-up TV, movies, and sports programming. It also allows you to remotely control your Sky box through the Sky Go app, providing flexibility and convenience for managing your entertainment setup. The Sky On Demand Connector introduces a number of additional features to the Sky+HD unit for a very small (up to free) cost. Yes, you can use a Sky Wireless Connector with any Sky box that has an Ethernet port. This includes Sky+ HD boxes, Sky Q boxes, and older Sky HD boxes. However, it’s worth noting that some older models may require an additional adapter to support wireless connectivity. Before purchasing a Sky Wireless Connector, make sure that your Sky box is compatible and has the necessary ports. If you have Sky broadband, your Sky Q Mini boxes will act as Wi-Fi hotspots. This is mostly a good thing, but some people have had problems where devices ping between the Mini’s Wi-Fi and your router’s Wi-Fi, which can cause connectivity problems for some devices. In this case, you may want to temporarily disable 2.4GHz networking to see if it fixes your problems. Be aware that this will mean your hotspot is only working on the 5GHz band, so connecting other devices to it may impact bandwidth and cause streaming problems. In other words, be really careful before you decide to disable 2.4GHz.For a cost, there is an extensive range of films offered, significantly more than the limited options (Anytime) that are offered without the On Demand Connector. Setting up a Sky Wireless Connector is a straightforward process. First, connect the Wireless Connector to your Sky box using an Ethernet cable. Then, plug the Wireless Connector into a power source using the provided power adapter. Next, navigate to the network settings on your Sky box and select “Wireless Connector” as the connection type. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the Wireless Connector to your home’s wireless network. Once the connection is established, you can start enjoying on-demand content wirelessly.

Alternatively, if your WiFi has a WPS button, but your Sky box doesn’t, you can connect via another means. When you set up the Sky Wireless Connector, you will need to follow a simple installation process. This typically involves plugging the device into your Sky box’s Ethernet port and connecting it to a power source. Once powered on, the device will automatically search for available Wi-Fi networks, allowing you to select and connect to your home network. Wired internet is perhaps the most reliable form of internet connection, ensuring a stable, uninterrupted connection flowing through the cable from your WiFi router to the Sky box. You will need an ethernet cable if you wish to connect the two. Once you have one, simply locate the internet port (pictured above) on your WiFi router and plug the wire in, then do the same on your Sky box. Built-in WiFi Multiroom Experience: If you have multiple TVs in your home, a Sky Wireless Connector enables you to enjoy multiroom viewing. This means you can watch your favorite shows and movies on different TVs simultaneously, without the need for additional Sky boxes or cables. It’s a cost-effective solution that provides convenience and entertainment for the whole family.

Network Connection Between Sky Q and Mini Box

One of the remarkable features of the new mini-boxes is their slim design, allowing them to easily fit behind wall-mounted TVs without requiring significant space between the TV and the wall. This convenience was not always feasible with previous Sky versions. When connecting a mini-box, you only need to connect the power and HDMI cables. Since the HDMI cable transmits signals to the TV, the only cable that needs to be hidden or managed is the power cable (you can refer to our tips on hiding TV cables in a separate article). However, it is worth noting that placing the mini-box between the wall and the TV may slightly impede the wireless signal. In such cases, a hard-wired connection may be more suitable. Troubleshooting Sky Mini Box Issues I’ll show you how to set Ethernet up on the main box, but I’m not going to cover how to make your entire system Ethernet-based: this is a specialist setup for when there’s a massive issue with getting wireless to work properly and should only be done by a Sky engineer. 1. Connect your main box As it stands, the only way to use wireless is to use the Sky Q wireless mesh as set up during installation. This has both a 2.4GHz and a 5GHz network. In most cases, the 2.4GHz network is used to provide a wireless hotspot if you have Sky broadband, but it can also be used for TV data sent to the Mini boxes. Actual streaming takes place over the 5GHz network, as this has the required bandwidth. If you’re having trouble, here’s how to fix Sky Q connectivity problems.
