Description

Designed for parents of children aged 3-5 years old (typically developing, at risk of language delay or with a mild language delay), I'm Ready! offers parents the chance to help their children develop the literacy skills they need before starting school. Parents learn simple strategies that are fun for children and can be used while sharing books or throughout the day. A pre-program consultation with the speech-language pathologist, which includes an assessment of your child and setting communication goals Your child may be a Discoverer, a Communicator, a First Words User or a Combiner, and knowing which stage she’s at will give you an idea of what she can and can’t do right now and what you can expect and encourage her to do next. Both parents and professionals benefit from Hanen’s integrated approach to early language intervention: professionals obtain the tools to support and guide parents, and parents learn how to make communication and interaction a natural part of every family activity and conversation. In this way, parents and speech-language pathologists collaborate so that speech therapy occurs throughout the child’s day, increasing the child’s opportunities to learn and use newly-acquired interaction and communication skills in different situations.

Discover how to get “in-tune” with your child’s communication and interests so that he’ll be more motivated to interact and communicate with you.Hanen has taught me and my daughter things that 12 months of private speech therapy never did, nor would have taught us - things like the stage of development my child is at, her communication style, how we as parents can become better and more interesting people to communicate with, and how to create opportunities to successfully communicate with our children. These are just a few of the things we have learnt. I could go on about the incredible progress that I, and others, have seen in my daughter’s communication, but there is another extraordinary element of this fantastic program, and that is the people who are part of it. Q: I am not an SLP, but I am interested in learning about Hanen strategies for myself or my organization. What can I do? Recognize your own communication style and learn which styles work best to promote your child’s learning This is why it’s so important not to ignore any sign that a child’s communication development may be delayed. Some parents are advised that their child will likely “grow out of it”, and they simply wait for the child to catch up. But a “wait and see” approach can be very detrimental during this critical learning phase. Since children with delayed speech or language delays can’t participate fully during activities and conversations, they may fall even further behind if they are not provided with the help they need. It’s exciting when your child uses his first words. This is a moment parents wait for, especially if language has been slow to develop. The First Words User may imitate words that he hears you say, or he may begin to use words all by himself. He starts by saying one word at a time. Children who communicate by making one sign at a time or by pointing to one picture at a time are also First Words Users. These first words represent people, objects and actions that are familiar and important in your child’s world, like mama, dada, juice, doggie, or up. Along with these words, he’ll continue to use gestures, sounds and facial expressions. A First Words User may also use one word for many different things. Juice might refer to any drink. Doggie might refer to any animal with four legs and a tail. It Takes Two to Talk is a practical, research-based guidebook that was developed primarily for parents of children with language delays, but which is based on current research that shows how all children can build strong language skills. This guidebook can show you simple ways to build communication into every moment you spend with your child to provide her with the best possible language-learning opportunities.Use the strategies when you play and read books with your child to help them interact and learn language Recognize your child’s stage and style of communication so that, together with the speech-language pathologist, you can identify next steps and goals

About

Learn how to add language to interactions in ways that will help your child understand and, when they're ready, express themselves. The Discoverer doesn’t yet understand words, but he’s becoming more aware of the world around him. He is starting to recognize some faces, objects, voices and sounds. He turns his head toward some sounds and voices, especially Mom’s or Dad’s. He is easily startled by sudden changes, such as loud noises or fast movements. a training workshop for speech-language pathologists to become certified tolead the It Takes Two to Talk parent program.
