Description

Synology Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) – An intuitive hypervisor that supports Windows, Linux, and Virtual DSM virtual machines. Its powerful disaster recovery tools help users achieve maximum service uptime. Actual maximum storage pool and volume sizes vary depending on drives used, the number of drive bays available, and the RAID configuration. A arguably smaller point here and one that has increased in it’s important lately! Unlike a number of higher profile (i.e more powerful and expensive) NAS systems in the Synology NAS portfolio that have much stricter supported official HDD and SSD compatibility/support, the Synology DS423+ supports pretty much everything you would expect! As long as it is SATA and 2.5/3.5″ – they will almost certainly appear on the Synology compatibility lists. There is still talk of Synology releasing a standard class range of HDDs (to accompany their existing enterprise HDDs and SSD media), but if/when they do, they will likely always allow competitor 3rd party HDDs in the WD Red and Seagate Ironwolf NAS drive series to be used on value series NAS like the DS423+. They DO only support upto 18TB at the time of writing across all supported HDD brands, likely down to Synology’s own drives currently capping at 18TB, but most buyers of the Synology Diskstation PlusNAS systems like this one were far less likely to install HDDs of this scale!

Synology's DS419slim is an interesting little enclosure. It's super-compact, coming in at just 120mm x 105mm x 142mm, and weighs just 0.66kg. Because it's so small and only takes 2.5-inch drives, Synology needed only to add a single 60mm fan to keep it running cool. IMPORTANT– If you are interested in following the News, Rumours, Releases and Predictions of the Synology 2024 series of Hardware and Software, we have already started correlating everything we know so far (as well as moving over a few 2023 things that have seemingly slipped into the Synology 2024 generation. If you’re just starting out with your very first NAS enclosure, I’d recommend either the Synology DiskStation DS120j or DS220j as Synology’s more affordable servers. They won’t win any awards for performance, but they’re excellent for storing files. Synology SNV3400 series M.2 NVMe SSD drives can be installed through the built-in M.2 slots to enable SSD caching or create SSD storage pools. Drives are sold separately. All NAS drives can be accessed locally over the network, as well as secure remote access is possible with brand-supported services (at no additional cost)The Marvell Armada 3700 88F3720 isn’t a brilliant processor, but it’s more than enough to handle file storage and some other lighter apps — you could even run Plex Media Server and stream music. The 512MB RAM isn’t enough for more intensive tasks, but it won’t cause any issues for the aforementioned tasks. Bays, Intel PT/i3/i5 8th Gen 2/4/6-Core CPU, 8-64GB DDR4 Memory, 1x 10Gbe Port, 2x 1GbE, USB 3.2 Gen 2, PCIe 3×16 + 3×4, 2x M.2 NVMe, HDMI 2.0 4K 60FPS, 2x Thunderbolt 3, 2-5yr Warranty The DS220+ is well designed too. You've got a front panel that covers the drive bays, resulting in a cleaner look. The sides and top are clear also. On the rear, you'll find the two USD 3.0 ports, as well as two 1Gb LAN ports. It would have been nice to see 2.5Gb ports here, but being able to link the two 1Gb ports up does help. Synology Drive – Host your own private cloud behind the safety of your NAS with 100% data ownership and no subscription fees. Drive has become one of the premier applications of DSM and allows uses to create intelligent shared team folders that support versioning, file streaming+pinning, encryption, Windows AD support (soon) and native file system support with Windows and macOS. A RAID 5 or 6 (from my understanding, the major differences are the amount or drives that can fail at once). If my understanding is correct, then the cinfig will be RAID 6. As a better, more secure solution.

And i want to put the Nas next to my second large 4k monitor that i also use to watch video. While hanging on the couch and stuffing myself full with all kinds of edible stuff. Can not specify that. Synology Office – Create documents, spreadsheets, and slides in a multi-user environment. Real-time synchronization and saving make collaboration a breeze.

All NAS drives can be accessed locally over the network, as well as secure remote access is possible with brand supported services (at no additional cost) Update UK 08/02/23– The Synology DS223 NAS has now been globally launched, and you can find my written DS223 review HERE and my YouTube video DS223 review HERE! The continued moves by Synology to prioritize 1st party hardware and software services may put some users off Performance figures are obtained through internal testing by Synology. Actual performance may vary depending on the testing environment, usage, and configuration. See performance charts for more information.

Being blind is not the only disability! NVDA is not appropriate or useful for every disability! And indeed, makes using DSM by voice or keyboard a nightmare. Choosing a drive depends on your budget and how much data you plan on storing. For data protection, it's best to run at least two drives in some form of redundant array of independent disks (RAID), which will help prevent any data loss. Thus, should you buy two 2TB drives and run them in RAID1, you'll only have 2TB of space for all your files. The best storage drives for NAS My thoughts: If you’re looking at the DS220+ as the perfect NAS but find the two drive bays a little too limiting for storage capacity, the DS420+ may be a better option. It has four drive bays and even SSD caching support. Synology Audio Station – Manage your music collection, create personal playlists, stream them to your own devices, or share with family or friends. What we said in our Review – The QNAP TS-451D2 is an interesting solution to add to the range at the tail end of 2020 for the company, sandwiched in between the launch of newer business devices and likely one of the last units in the QNAP D series. The brand has long since shaken off the reputation of being a hardware provider and light software provider, becoming something much, much even. With a huge number of first-party applications in the QNAP QuTS library (many of which are genuinely unique) as well as releasing an affordable 4-Bay NAS solution that has aimed itself at the new NAS buyer, or the NAS user who wants to spend a little now but can expand greatly later. My thoughts: One may overlook the DS120j as being too limiting with an ARM processor and RAM that cannot be upgraded. I’d give it serious consideration if you’re looking for your very first NAS, one for a student, or to store some files. Synology DiskStation DS120j: Best entry-level NAS Synology DiskStation DS120j. (Source: NAS Master) Support for Latest Large Capacity Hard Drives**: Modern NAS systems should support up to 20TB NAS hard drives, such as Seagate Ironwolf 22TB and WD Red 22TB. Synology has been providing its own branded range of hard drives and SSDs for a little over 2 and a half years now and it is surprising how ‘normal’ it seems now. Originally when the SAT5200, SNV3400/SNV3500 and HAT5300 ranges were launched, many (myself included) wondered what the uptake would be when Seagate and WD hold such dominance in this area. Fast forward to MID 2022 and enterprise/high-scale-business NAS user base has started to take them on board (a little because of changes in device compatibility, but also that the HDDs themselves, firmware upgraded Toshiba MG Enterprise drives), with the only major criticisms being that the pricing seems a tad high and the available capacities somewhat limited. Now, that first criticism is tough to counter, given the current hardware shortages globally AND the fact that these enterprise (not Pro) series drives are not in-hosue built, so the Toshiba middle ground is something of a hurdle in the profit margin no doubt). However, Synology HAVE been working on the range of capacities and alongside the original HAT5300-8T, HAT5300-12T and HAT5300-16T capacities, they introduced a modest 4TB in the spring of 2022 and now, an 18TB HAT5300-18T (using the Toshiba MG09 Drive). Now, it is also worth highlighting that Toshiba has been working on making a 20TB (MG10) drive commercially available, so expect this to get Synology HAT5300-20T adaption in the near future too, but below is how the 18TB compares with the rest of the range Hardware Specifications

This is particularly surprising, given that the Synology DS423+ is very much a non-enterprise and non-business-focused NAS system. Additionally, the DS423+ NAS bears huge comparison with the DS920+ released in 2020, a HUGELY popular NAS system, which has NOT had M.2 NVMe SSD storage pool services added retroactively – so many users (myself included) would have jsut ASSUMED that the DS423+ would not support this feature. It IS worth highlighting though that the DS423+ CPU uses Gen 2 lanes, only allows pools on Synology NVMe SSDs (SNV3400 / SNV3410), cannot currently use the M.2s for booting DSM and does not have any external connectivity that allows the performance benefits of M.2 NVMes to be realised externally. Still, if you are looking for higher speed storage areas for a VM, Surveillance alerts/recordings, high frequency data bases or just to run the Synology apps themselves in conjunction with data on the slower HDD array, you WILL see benefits! #2 – Great Performance and Support of Plex, Emby and Jellyfin Media Server The AMD Emb.Ryzen instead of a Intel Celeron (with Integrated Graphics) will be a dealbreaker for alot of users Compatibility Across Multiple Operating Systems**: Each NAS system should work seamlessly with Windows, Mac, Android, and Linux. All NAS solutions (regardless of brand) feature the ability to host a shared drive on your PC/Mobile/Laptop systems that are synchronized with the NAS via the network/internet, but is shown in your native operating system file manager (i.e Mac Finder or Windows Explorer)Usable capacity for each volume will be lower than the maximum volume size and is dependent on the filesystem and the amount of system metadata stored. Bays, 2x Gen 3 x2 M.2 NVMe 2280, Intel Pentium Gold G7400 2-core/4-thread 3.7 GHz CPU, Intel Embedded UHD Graphics 710, 8-128GB DDR4 Memory, 2x 2.5Gbe Port, PCIe Gen 4 x16 + PCIe Gen 3 x2, USB 10G, HDMI 2.0B, 3-5yr Warranty
