You can explore a good chunk of the Antrim Coast road in a day, but you’ll be rushing through the various stops. If possible, allow at least two days to give yourself some breathing space. 4. Spend a few hours or a full day depending on how long you want to spend at each glen or use one of the glens as your base to explore up and down the eastern coast of Northern Ireland. There are a two main routes you can take within the park and you can mix and match as you wish. It does help to understand the lie of the land. The park covers a deep glen, Glenariff, with the Inver river running from the top of the glen, where you will see the lovely Inver Upper Waterfall, down and out to the sea. Some way down the glen, the Inver is joined by the Glenariff river, which runs down a narrow gulley and is popular for its many waterfalls. In Ballintoy Harbour follow the winding road from the village past the white-washed parish church. Spoiler alert: the harbour doubled as exterior Iron Islands shots in Game of Thrones®. Next, you will come across Glencloy, also referred to as the ‘Glen of the Hedges’. At the bottom of the glen lies the coastal village of Carnlough, where a delightful trip up to the Cranny Falls is recommended. The presence of the charming and picturesque Carnlough Harbour enhances the glen. Glenariff Forest Park Hike, Glens of Antrim Glenarm Castle, dating from around 1750 with early 19th century alterations (Restored around 1825) lies near the village and the Antrim estate extends up the Glen for about four miles on both sides of the river. Near the castle can be traced to the remains of the old church Templeoughter, the upper church.

The Troubles was a conflict in Northern Ireland between the 1960’s and late 1990’s, ending with the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. This has left it’s imprint in the various towns, villages and communities throughout Northern Ireland and can be seen in the various murals throughout the region. What are the best things to see in the Antrim Glens?To get to Fair Head, you will need to take the turn-off from the main Torr Road. Once again you will need to negotiate steep climbs and narrow one lane roads with spectacular scenery in this section of your Irish road trip. Once you reach Fair Head you will be reward with views to Ballycastle, Murlough Bay and Rathlin Island. The cliffs rise 600 feet above sea level and are amongst the tallest in the country thereby providing some of the most breathtaking scenery in Northern Ireland indicating ship movements in the Straits of Moyle ( Sruth na Maoile) between Northern Ireland and Scotland Day 9: Departure from Portstewart Antrim Glens & Coastline Map Antrim Glens & Coastline Terrain Waymarking Just make sure to visit during the day, as some are located in areas of Belfast to avoid at night, like The Falls Road and The Shankill Road. An echo of times past, the derelict railway station of Retreat sits at the apex of the glen. Once the terminus of the Ballymena to Parkmore line, the station was a lifeline for local mines at Altmore, ferrying away lime and ore. There was once a proposal to extend the line to the Glenariffe narrow railway, but it remained a plan, never seeing fruition.
