Description

Comparable with other fast chargers on the market, the EO Mini Pro 2 offers a reasonably speedy charging time- especially considering its compact size. The single-phase connection simply means that the power flows through a single conductor instead of three. While a three-phase charger can work faster, they are not compatible with various AC suppliers, and installing an appropriate cable comes with a price. EO recommend a 20A rated supply for a 16A charging station and a 40A supply for a 32A charging station. Your electrics will be rated for 16A or 32A already but may need upgrading depending on how much power you draw. With no need for earth rods, this smart-controlled EV charge point is more intelligent than most, with the Konnect+ app and free over-the-air (OTA) updates (just like your mobile phone) to keep your charge point up to date and in tip-top condition. With IP54 (IP66 on some models) certification, the precious mechanics of your charger will be protected from dust. It’s so robust that it even claims to operate in -25ºC conditions! The EO Mini Pro 2 is a tiny, inconspicuous ‘smart’ home charger available tethered or untethered, charging at speeds up to 7.2kW (single-phase).

Ensuring EV chargers work well with energy tariffs optimises the charging performance and efficiency of the system. It allows users to schedule their charging sessions during periods with lower tariffs, thereby reducing overall energy costs. Several chargers can automatically integrate with tariffs through smart scheduling, which enhances the user experience and maximises the benefits of solar energy. Smaller than a piece of A5 paper and equipped with simple LED status lights, the EO Mini Pro 2 is the most inconspicuous EV home charger on the market. It’s reliable, well-made, simple to use and gets the job done. However, solar is optional, the app is average, and installation requires an earthing device. So far, it’s been all good with the EO Mini Pro 3 Smart Electric Vehicle Charger, with successful charging sessions that don’t tend to take too long at all with our car’s smaller battery. A few hours for a 20 to 80 percent charge seems pretty good to me at a largely spot-on 7kW charging speed. Pod Point’s latest smart charger, the Solo 3, has a decent app and is available as a tethered or untethered unit. It’s also available as a 22kW 3-phase charger – ideal for car parks. It lets you schedule charging and monitor sessions. The Ohme chargers – ePod and Home Pro – have more smart features and the Home Pro has the advantage of an in-built display. Overall, the Pod Point is a decent charger, but the Ohme chargers are better. Hypervolt vs Zappi Most home chargers deliver the charging capacity of 3kW or 7kW. Some 22kW chargers can be installed, delivering a charge of around 40 miles in roughly an hour. Note that they require a three-phase supply, rather than the single-phase most UK residential homes are built with, and not all vehicles will accept that power delivery from a home supply. If you don’t like the EO Smart Home app, you can use your vehicle manufacturer app instead if it has one, turning the EO into a charge point you just plug into.

The Zappi v2.1 is the best EV charger for solar panels and renewables, with feeds for these and special charge modes for balancing. Charger Comparisons Zappi vs OhmeHowever, in 2020 they launched their first EO Mini home charger and entered the home market. Since then, they have become a competitive home EV charging solution. A key thing to consider before installing the EO Mini Pro, is that it has no O-PEN protection built in. This protection is what would shut down the EO charger if it detected that the earth was faulty or missing when coming into the property. This is imperative that you have some form of protection as the car body could become live if there was a fault with the EO Mini Pro and the earth was missing or not working properly. We didn’t test the solar charging but our electrician says the feature works perfectly and he would recommend it to anyone with solar panels.

As the electric vehicle market grows and changes there are likely to be rapid changes in EV home chargers and electric vehicles in general. The EO system is a modular system so upgrades and changes are easy. You can easily add more EV charging points at home, to make sure you have enough charge points installed as your home charger needs change. If the EO Mini Pro is installed with a Garo earthing device then no rod is needed, but if you don’t use a Garo, you should still use an earth rod. You can install the EO Mini Pro inside a garage for example and that way it would use the house earthing and not need a separate device. But this would mean you could only charge indoors and would have to put the electric vehicle in the garage every time, doing it outside with this setup is dangerous. The best home EV chargers you can buy in 2023 1.
