The Unicorn Theatre is a children's theatre in the London Borough of Southwark, in England. It is a custom-built, RIBA Award–winning building on Tooley Street, which opened in 2005. [1] The theatre was designed by Keith Williams, built by Arup and comprises two theatre spaces (the Weston and Clore Theatres), an education studio, rehearsal space, café and the John Lyon meeting room. In November 1949 Caryl Jenner created the Mobile Theatre Ltd. [3] Jenner's mission was to drive around the towns of Britain, as well as isolated villages to bring theatre to new audiences. They supplemented their income by performing to adults in the evenings. In 1962, the name changed again, to the Unicorn Theatre Club. In 1967, the company gave up touring having received an annual grant from the Arts Council, [3] took up the lease at the Arts Theatre in London, which remained its home until the present Unicorn Theatre was built in 2005. Jenner died on 29 January 1973 at the age of 55. [3] Presidents [ edit ] A not-for-profit company which provides space for arts, culture and creative enterprise. The space is located in the former school hall, is approximately 900 sqft, and has a wooden floor and a smallkitchenette. The public space and cafe at Spare Street is available to hire for events and is a licensed venue with a capacity of approximately 60 people. Husky Studios There’s not a dull moment and the push and pull between Josie’s desire to make sense of why and what is happening to her and the Bureacrat’s attempts at distancing and evasion is beautifully played. Both are trapped in their own ways, and both forced to be part of a dualogue dance they didn’t ask for. The performances are all exceptional, it’s a fantastic cast. Nkhanise Phiri plays Josie with such charm and kinetic positivity that she’s a joy to watch, Jadie Rose Hobson is the best friend we all need, steadfast, supportive and endlessly patient and Tom Moores’ ‘Bureaucrat’ manages to be menacing, vulnerable, sarcastic and sincere all at once. Looking ahead to next Easter, Unicorn’s Associate Director Rachel Bagshaw directs Le Gateau Chocolat in I Wish, a new show with songs about a mischievous wish-giver, created with composer Seiriol Davies. And finally Nina Segal’s radical retelling as a musical adventure of The Odyssey will be directed by Jennifer Tang. At the Unicorn it is our fundamental belief that access to arts and culture is a right, not a privilege, and that all children deserve these experiences, regardless of their circumstance. We want our audiences to feel comfortable when watching our shows and don't mind if they are vocal or energetic - in fact we actively encourage our audience to laugh, respond, clap and cheer! The day after her 12th birthday and Josie K is innocently finishing off some leftover chocolate cake before school when her world is changed by the appearance of a ‘Bureaucrat’ who tells her that she is on trial. “ Maybe it’s for something good” her best friend Becca suggests optimistically, and so starts this inventive whirlwind of a play. Leigh Toney’s direction is a delicious dance of movement and energy, and the set design (Rose Revitt) perfectly complements the simple complexity of the story.
