Despite him looking like he doesn’t have one iota of self-absorption, he’s one of the most attractive guys I’ve ever seen. But not only did that not happen—he forgot I was there. No one knew anyone was in the house until they heard me scream from the second floor. I know he holds a lot of guilt for that. He apologized every time he saw me for weeks, but the apologies became as scarce as his visits and phone calls. The resentment I hold is still very much there, even though I wish it wasn’t. The fire was an accident. I survived. Those are the two things I try to focus on, but it’s hard when I think about it every time I look at myself. The sequel to Hopeless, Losing Hope unravels Dean’s guilt-ridden past and his early childhood encounters with a troubled Sky. I’m so beyond caring about his motives now, I don’t even point out the pile of bullshit he just threw at me. My entire life, all he did was push me to follow in his footsteps. After the fire, his encouragement came to a complete halt. I’m not an idiot. I know he thinks I don’t have what it takes to be an actress anymore, and part of me knows he’s right. Looks are really important in Hollywood.

Random Dude just put his lips in my hair. What. Is going. On. The guy reaches across the table for my father’s hand. “I’m Ben,” he says. “Benton James Kessler. Your daughter’s boyfriend.”Honestly, I felt conflicted about what my rating should be for a while because the writing was still very good and the plot kept me intrigued, but Ben was just so horrible (for reasons I will explain later in detail) and I was not happy with the way this ended, so I couldn't in good conscience give it more that one star. I went into this story completely blind without knowing anything other than what the blurb said and knowing the fact that it was a standalone. My personal recommendation is that you do the same thing. Try not to read anything about the plot and just dive right into the story! As such, I’m not going to talk about the storyline at all here — this is a spoiler-free review — and instead, I’m only going to share the blurb: Fallon and Ben are intimate, and it seems a relationship will ensue. Ben wants to move to New York to be with her, but she believes it’s best for him to stay to support Kyle’s widow and child. I don't know why I'm being so defensive. I think writers just naturally become defensive when their ideas are compared to other ideas, even if it's done innocently. But mine and Fallon's story is one-of-a-kind, and I feel somewhat protective of it. Ben basically navigates throughout this book doing whatever he wants without asking Fallon’s consent and then forcing her to do things because he thinks she’s uncomfortable for no reason. It’s just disgusting that the man’s presence in this book is written so much more naturally and commandeering in this book.

The third and final installment in the Slammed trilogy, This Girl takes the familiar story and turns it on its head, with the story unfolding from Will’s perspective, rather than Layken’s. The couple continues to struggle with the shadows of Will’s past, balancing the weight of that with the hope of their future. It’s sad that this is what our relationship has come to. Knowing that a simple lunch date has to be more than just a daughter wanting to see her father.

Creative Play

I also might think he’s cute simply because he’s one of the few people in the last two years who doesn’t immediately look away the moment my eyes meet his. He gives his head a slight shake. Your mother left me because I slept with her best friend. My personality had nothing to do with it. Fallon's internal monologue just constantly sounds like she's about to cry. I get it. I would too if I was spending even one second with Ben.
