Another detective from Homicide. Baxter enjoys teasing Eve about anything he can, usually relating to her relationship with Roarke and associated changes; despite this teasing Roarke views Baxter as a solid cop and easygoing person. Harry Bosch and the Lincoln Lawyer team up to exonerate a woman who’s already served five years for killing her ex-husband.

As the title suggests the setting for this book is the theatre and its players, and the initial murder is at an A-lister party. A famous actor raises a glass of champagne as a toast to his wife, takes a sip and crashes to the ground. Death by cyanide poisoning but who could have done it? I had a very strong gut feeling which eventually proved to be correct. I think I read too much crime fiction. If investigators everywhere used their "instincts" like that, God help the innocents who get caught in the cross-fire. So who is J.D. Robb? Well, she’s Nora Roberts, of course. J.D. Robb is her nom de plume which she used for this series as she and Berkley (one of her publishers) decided to publish the works so that they have no relation to Nora Roberts and her storytelling style. So, though we know it is the same person, this series is essentially the work of a completely different author.

The other books of the series are Glory in Death, Immortal in Death, Rapture in Death, Ceremony in Death, Vengeance in Death, Holiday in Death and Conspiracy in Death. All these books captivated the first audience to be introduced to it. Eve Dallas’ story was one to follow. Other characters regularly featured in the books include Captain Ryan Feeney, Dr Charlotte Mira, Detective Delia Peabody and Detective Ian McNab. J. D. Robb (pseudonym for Nora Roberts) infuses murder, suspense, and drama in Encore in Death, a well-written futuristic police procedural set in New York City featuring Lieutenant Eve Dallas with the NYC police department and set around 2061. Like a recipe with salt sprinkled on instead of cooked in.... its not bad, but its missing something in terms of smoothness and flow. This book is the straw that breaks my personal value for money equation - the reason I stop reading JD Robb, 20 years after I started, with "Seduction in death" in 2002. a b c Robb, J.D. (2000). "Chapter Twenty". Judgment in Death. Penguin Publishing Group. ISBN 9781101203798.After fifty six books Robb is still finding new ways and new places for her characters to die. I really admire her creativity. Of course she bases all the action around her established team of Eve and Roarke and friends who are probably the real reason most of us keep on reading the books! Eve was found in an alley in Dallas, Texas with severe injuries and evidence of extensive physical and sexual abuse. Her social worker named her and put Eve into a foster home. After reaching the age of majority, Eve has a big desire to move to New York City, where she hopes to become a police officer. Throughout the series, her memories return, mostly through a series of nightmares, revealing a history of incestual rape and the patricide of her father, Richard Troy. It seems like the author wrote herself into a dead-end, then used the investigators "instinct" to force fit another central character into the role of the killer and finally edited in a bunch of cues and clues in the first chapter to tie it together.

Mira is the resident psychiatrist and profiler for the NYPSD. She has several children with her husband, Dennis, and has grandchildren as well. She is a pretty and feminine woman whom Eve often consults on her cases. Eve loves Charlotte very much but has not admitted it to her face; nevertheless, Charlotte knows. Charlotte thinks of Eve as a daughter, a fact which annoyed Mira's own daughter at one point, and throughout the series has gotten Eve to open up to her more and more. Nadine is one of the intended victims of the murderer in Glory in Death, but is saved by Eve, who is the primary investigator on the case. She is an ambitious but ethical reporter, who will always protect her source. Nadine is a sharp dresser, a fact Eve finds odd.a b c Robb, J.D. (2005). "Chapter Thirteen". Survivor in Death. Penguin Publishing Group. ISBN 9781101205006. Eve's former partner and the man who trained her. He no longer works Homicide, but is instead the captain of the Electronics Detection Division (EDD). Feeney likes to dress a bit messily and loves his electronics. He is a dedicated cop and a good husband to his wife, Sheila. They have several children and grandchildren. He is often seen eating a bag of candied nuts, which he may offer to Eve when they are deep in conversation about a case. Because Naked in Death was somewhat popular, seven other books of the In Death series were spawned. The story of Eve Dallas was well worth the read—and worth telling across various other books. Not only does Eve Dallas have a fierce, fierce heart, she also has strength and the utmost integrity. Her increasingly mushrooming relationship with Roarke, a man of mystifying fellow, is also a big talking point. Well written and formulaic, but the story fails to stand the test of logical reasoning in the central scene. This is the one where Eve intuits who she thinks the killer is. That chain of thinking is weak and hinges purely on "instinct".
