Jesus Says is the power-pop that we know Ash are normally excellent at, but it’s very half-hearted, especially the uninspired, lethargic “woos”. a b Ramsay, Simon (13 September 2022). On 14 July 1998, Nu-Clear Sounds was announced for release in three months' time. [55] The following month, Ash played a few festivals in mainland Europe and appeared at the Reading Festival. [20] After a premier on BBC Radio1, "Jesus Says" was released as the album's lead single on 21September 1998. [55] [56] Two versions were released on CD: one with "Taken Out" and "Heroin, Vodka, White Noise", while the other included "Radiation" and "Dancing on the Moon". [56] The music video for "Jesus Says" sees the band perform in an atic as the camera swivels 360-degrees. [57] In October and early November 1998, the band embarked on a tour of the United Kingdom. [20] Nu-Clear Sounds was released on 5October. [55] The Australian version featured "Radiation" and "Dancing on the Moon", while the European edition featured "Taken Out". [56] The Japanese version included "Taken Out" and "A Life Less Ordinary". [58] In the United States, Ash had been on Reprise Records, who released 1977 in that territory; for Nu-Clear Sounds, the band ran into issues with Reprise's owner Warner Bros. Records, delaying the album's US release. [59] [60]a b c d e f Patterson, Sylvia. "Ash - Nu-Clear Sounds". NME. Archived from the original on 17 August 2000 . Retrieved 14 November 2020. Wildsurf – A summery tune and the second of the two singles taken from the album. One of Ash's upbeat numbers, it is quite repetitive and catchy. Not one of my favourites though. Raftery, Brian M. But if we really want to talk about self-sabotage and self-destruction let’s talk about “Numbskull.” Released as the last single from Nu-Clear Sounds, it begins with an almost desperate guttural scream from the wry frame of Tim Wheeler. A sound that just by looking at Wheeler’s cute face might be hard to fathom ever coming out of his mouth. But boy, we’ve seen nothing yet. a b c d e f g h Nu-Clear Sounds (booklet). Ash. Yet it is the mellower songs such as “Burn Out,” “Folk Song,” “Aphrodite” and the quite beautiful album closer “I’m Gonna Fall” that show that Ash are at their best when they don’t try to overcomplicate their sound and let their natural tunesmith tendencies play out. These songs could have easily fitted within the context of 1977 and subsequent Ash records. They are quite simply ethereal. In 1997 after touring alongside Weezer, the band invited Charlotte Hatherley on board as a second guitarist, who played one of her first gigs at the year’s V Festival. Ahead of the band’s sophomore full-length “Nu-Clear Sounds”, Ash issued the single “Jesus Says”, however years of constant touring and recording were beginning to take their toll on the group. “Nu-Clear Sounds” turned out to be a commercial and critical flop and the band returned to Wheeler’s parents’ house, where the band began, to play and find their roots once again. The trip home worked wonders for the group whose subsequent album “Free All Angels” topped the UK Albums chart in 2001. Spawning the singles “Shining Light”, “Burn Baby Burn”, “Sometimes, and “Candy”, the first of which won the Ivor Novello Award for “Best Contemporary Song”, the album introduced Ash as a staple of Brit-pop.
