Although we always recommend using a professional to install your artificial grass, you may be surprised to find out just how easy it is to install artificial grass on concrete. If this is the case, it is strongly advised that you break out the existing concrete and follow the procedure for a typical artificial grass installation. To account for any errors during the installation process, we always recommend adding 10% to these measurements. Unfortunately, this can’t be done using our online flooring calculator. But it’s pretty easy to work out yourself. Simply multiply each of the measurements above by 1.10 to get the desired total.

You could also opt to remove the concrete entirely and start with a standard installation from the soil. This way, you are guaranteed good drainage. How To Install Artificial Grass On Concrete – A Step By Step Guide Finally, I lifted one of the slabs and found what looks like a mortar mix (sand and cement). I poured water in this area and it didn’t really soak away and took a long time to clear. I then used a 8mm drill bit (biggest I had) to drill a hole which would only go down as far as 60mm deep. The drill bit came out with sand on it. I poured some water in this hole and it didn’t drain well. Therefore, does this mean the idea of installing grass on top of the current slabs whilst drilling some holes for drainage won’t work as I cannot fathom removing all the slabs and preparing the sub base again. I presume that the previous owner who decided to slab the whole garden area (which used to be natural grass) as they had dogs would have prepped the sub base accordingly before slabbing it. However, your existing concrete may not be perfectly flat, and you may have noticed that puddles appear in certain areas.

Where can I buy a foam underlay?

Brushing the grass involves removing the debris from the surface with a plastic tooth leaf rake. After this, simply go across the lawn with a stiff push broom, brushing against the grain of the grass to fluff them up and make them stand up again. Whether the artificial grass will drain depends on how it’s installed. It will rely on the installers; while some do a perfect job, others do a substandard job that doesn’t involve proper preparation and putting a suitable sub-base in your garden. This can make the grass to be non-porous. In theory, high-quality carpet underlay can last for up to 25 years – but the older it gets, the less effective it becomes. It can harbour dust and dirt. It may start to show signs of wear and tear and can affect the overall finish of the carpet. With this in mind, it’s usually a good idea to invest in new underlay each time you replace your carpet or laminate. We recommend that you lay the grass with the leaning direction of the pile towards your house or main area. This is going to give off a more natural look to your installation.

If you have any artificial grass offcuts left over, you could use this time to do something useful with them. Foam underlays offer many advantages for artificial grass installations. As a result, a lot of DIY installers choose to fortify their installations with it. All of our underlay products are measured and priced per m 2 and, using these measurements, it’s easy to work out how much carpet underlay you will need – and approximately how much it costs. How do you work out m 2? Every artificial grass has a very slight pile direction and this step should be done by brushing into the pile, which will lift the fibres. We strongly advise using a good quality, free-drainage foam such as this 10mm artificial grass foam underlay which is perfectly acceptable for practically all applications.

Once you have done the measurements of what area is to be covered, you can figure out exactly how much grass is needed. It’s also important to keep in mind where the joins are going to be, if any. We always advise using a professional to install artificial grass, as their experience will result in a better finish.

If you’ve followed the steps above carefully, you will now have an artificial lawn that will last you up to 20 years, or even more. Ensure that the glue runs continuously along every part of the perimeter, without leaving any gaps. These gaps will be potential weaknesses where it may be possible to lift the grass.

Avoid laying artificial grass on bases that do not allow drainage or that offer inadequate draining. Concrete yards, tarred surfaces, and paving stone slabs are not the best bases. These materials would have to be removed before laying a well-draining aggregate layer. Alternatively, you’d need to drill drainage holes in these hard surfaces before laying your artificial grass. Your concrete can be hosed and/or brushed with a stiff broom. Although not essential, a jet wash will make light work of this stage. Finally, how do we go about making the facing edge that you see as you come out the patio doors astetically pleasing to look at but more importantly trip safe? I’ve seen some rubber edging strips but can these be glued down and how do you allow water to drain past it?
