I love Eric Carle's books in a huge way, so I thought I would really enjoy a book about his art which is what the title implies this book is about. It isn't. It's about Eric Carle's biography, museum, what other people thought about him. I got so bored. I started to skim the endless text just so I could return the book to the library and get it out of my house. At first, Carle found this popularity a mystery. “But over time I have come to believe many children can identify with the helpless, small, insignificant caterpillar,” he explained to the Guardian in 2016, “and they rejoice when it turns into a beautiful butterfly. I think it’s a message of hope. It says: I too can grow up. I too can unfold my wings (my talent) and fly into the world.”

Eric Carle, (born June 25, 1929, Syracuse, New York, U.S.—died May 23, 2021, Northampton, Massachusetts), American writer and illustrator of children’s literature who published numerous best-selling books, among them The Very Hungry Caterpillar (1969), which by 2018 had sold some 50 million copies and had been translated into more than 60 languages. I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases, we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown. The unknown often brings fear with it. In my books, I try to counteract this fear, to replace it with a positive message. I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them that learning is really both fascinating and fun. Personal life Eric Carle, 2009a b Bernstein, Fred A. (December 13, 2007). "Hungry Caterpillar in the Florida Keys". I recently created an Eric Carle inspired art project for children at our library, and felt a kinship as I read this.. I didn't know his exacrt technique at the time, but all the flat spaces in my home looked very much like his studio as I had messy fun painting textures and colors on thin paper to be later used for collage. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, published in 1969, was welcomed by parents and children with its story of the metamorphosis of a green and red caterpillar with a touch of blue and brown to a proudly multi-coloured butterfly.

Carle was sent to the small town of Schwenningen to escape the bombings of Stuttgart. [8] When he was 15, the German government conscripted boys of that age to dig trenches on the Siegfried Line. Carle did not care to think about it deeply and said his wife thought he suffered from post-traumatic stress. According to this research, the best way to make new connections in the brain is by building on something already known. After returning to the United States in the early 1950s, Carle worked for some years as a graphic designer. Author and educator Bill Martin Jr. was drawn to Carle’s advertising work, leading the two to collaborate on their classic 1967 book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? In the years since, Carle has authored and illustrated over seventy books beloved by generations of children. Newly discovered jumping spider named for children's author".
