Description

As for the stand Philips has included a bench type stand which has two color options to choose from depending on how you will place the legs. One side has a bright metal finish while the other side is a darker metal one. It’s not a big deal choosing between the two but a nice small touch from Philip’s design team. Typically, the screen hits around 770 nits of brightness when showing a white HDR window covering 10% of the screen. However, in Vivid mode we noted that the TV briefly hit a mighty – for a “standard” OLED TV – 943 nits, before the brightness rapidly dropped off to a more typical level. The Philips has a clear advantage over most rivals when it comes to definition and detail resolution, though. The image is crisp and solid to a degree that makes these other sets look a little flat by comparison. What’s most impressive is that this detail and definition doesn’t look forced or artificially enhanced – the set’s crispness doesn’t come at the expense of naturalism.

Philips TVs have long had a reputation for delivering exceptionally sharp pictures - and the OLED806 continues that trend. Especially since you can now leave Philips' Ultra Resolution feature on with good quality HD and 4K sources without it causing the picture to look gritty, harsh or unnatural. The 43- to 65-inch models get a T-bar stand for support, with the sizes up to 58-inches getting swivel action. The biggest models in the range switch to feet at either side that can adjusted to narrow or wide configurations. The OLED856/806 also comes with a version of Philips’ anti-burn in technology that detects static logos and reduces the light output to avoid burn in. Where the OLED856 differs from the 806 is its T-bar stand, which will give it a higher profile in a room. In other respects, it’s clear why this is at the bottom. There’s no Android TV, replaced by the Saphi interface. That means no built-in Chromecast, Google Assistant, or the Google Play Store, but the set will support major SVOD apps in Netflix and Disney+. There’s no Ambilight, and the number of HDMI inputs drops to three. There are various panel technologies. Each has its own specific features - viewing angles, color reproduction, response time, brightness/contrast, production cost, etc. The image quality depends directly on the type of the display panel used. The last few years manufacturers push the envelope more and more when it comes to their TVs input lag performance and we have reached a point where we get amazing low values that can make these TVs excellent for gaming purposes. Philips was one of the few TV manufacturers that were lagging in this area but the OLED 806 seems to be the turning point for them. The Sony A95K OLED delivers image quality that's almost identical to the Samsung S90C OLED, but it also supports advanced home theater features like Dolby Vision HDR and DTS:X. However, it has worse input lag, so it's worse for gaming, and it's currently more expensive and harder to find, so we recommend the Samsung TV over it. For home theater fans, while the Sony has amazing image processing, the LG G3 OLED also has good processing while being brighter and being the better gaming TV overall, so it's the better choice for most people. That’s a lot more effort than you have to make to get the best out of most modern OLEDs, but it’s an effort that’s well worth making. As the camera pans across the family farm at the start of Interstellar, individual stalks of corn are distinguishable in the huge field. There’s nuanced variety to the greens in this field, which are different shades to those in the adjacent lawn. Less well sorted TVs would have you believe that they’re practically the same colour. The set also carries a Dolby Vi

As such the OLED 806 supports not only the basic HDR10 but also HLG which is used for streaming content and both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision which use dynamic metadata for a much better image quality outcome. However, please note that the 48-inch OLED807 won't be able to match the same highs as this, because the panel can't get as bright at this size (it's the same for all 48-inch OLEDs) – this brightness applies to the 55-inch, 65-inch and 77-inch models. The biggest step up comes from its brightness. We measured a decently sustained peak light output of nearly 870 nits on a white HDR window covering 10% of the 55-inch OLED807’s screen, which is around 100 nits up on the peak light output of the OLED806. This amounts to an almost 15% increase that can be keenly felt in both small bright highlights and full-screen brightness when watching HDR sources. Being able to deliver more native brightness means, too, that there’s a wider range of natural looking tones in the brightest parts of HDR images, as well as reducing the potential for clipping (lost shading) in peak light areas. However, the overriding point in all this is that while you may well prefer to switch to different presets for different content, and while you may well want to tweak those presets to get the best from them, ultimately, the 55OLED806 is capable of adapting brilliantly to pretty much every taste and occasion. Angled view of the Philips 55OLED806Overall the sound quality of the OLED 806 was a cut above the traditional 2.0 channels systems with good clarity, good mid-range and energetic highs end but it cannot do anything more to create an impressive surround atmosphere. For that reason an external surround system or at least a good performing soundbar would be preferable. Ports and Connectivity
