At f/2.8 vignetting is severe at close to 2.5 stops. At f/4 it is reduced only a little to about 2 stops and by f/8 it is still at 1.5 stops which is about the highest value I have ever seen at f/8. The FE 2.8/35 performs well here. Brighter stars have a small comet’s tail but compared to other lenses it is very small. The only real issue I see is the very significant vignetting. I often press whatever lens I'm reviewing at the time into the around-the-house, walk-around, general-purpose lens role and 35mm usually works very well for this. When it comes to buttons, rings or other exterior features, prime lenses are typically sparse and the Sony 35mm lens is no exception, with single 1-inch wide focus ring and not much else. The lightly-ribbed focus ring is very easily to rotate, with a buttery-smooth feel. Since the lens is a focus-by-wire system, there's no focus distance window built-in to the lens, nor is there a manual AF/MF toggle switch either -- that's controlled via the camera as well.Price / advertising errors (technical issues, misquotes, or listings which are suspected to be incorrect). Above: Side by side there doesn’t appear to be that much between them, but each feels quite different in use. The only issue I could see are some onion rings which can appear in critical situations. Those uses coincide with most uses for the 35mm focal length with slightly tighter framing or slightly longer perspective for the same framing being the difference.

The lens seems to be built to high standards with a metal hull and a focusing ring which has zero play so it feels very nice. There will be some spherochromatism if you aren't in perfect focus, but that's a completely different aberration.There is minor field curvature, at around r=15mm the plane of focus moves closer to the camera but the effect isn’t strong. Close Focus Performance Wide aperture lenses tend to have an advantage in this regard and this lens is capable of producing good quality stars. Focus breathing (the image changing size as focused) is mostly of interest to cinematographers who don't want the image changing size ("breathing") as the lens is focused among different subjects.
