And I said, “Oh you think these are carrots. These are not carrots. They are orange twiglets from Jupiter.” She studied Art at Manchester Polytechnic and London Art School, after which she worked in a variety of jobs, including assistant to Damien Hirst. She also started her own company, 'Chandeliers for the People', making exotic lampshades. In 2008 Lauren launched UNESCO’s ‘My Life is a Story’ Campaign for UNESCO’s Programme for the Education of Children in Need, and was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2008.I missed out on everything. I had always hoped that I might be discovered in a supermarket, or maybe at a bus stop – I had heard that this sometimes happened to people who then went on to lead hugely successful lives. Lauren Child is a multi-award-winning, bestselling writer and artist. She is the creator of many much-loved characters, including Clarice Bean, Ruby Redfort and Charlie and Lola. The story is full of holiday cheer, and I loved hearing about all the family traditions that Clarice Bean celebrated with her family. It got me into the holiday spirit! on television we have to be careful to show that Lola is eating bits of dried banana, instead of salt and vinegar crisps, because the BBC have strict guidelines on children and eating. I don’t think people need to be so worried, to be honest […] Children aren’t stupid.' In Child’s series, the focus is completely on the endearing sibling relationship between seven-year-old Charlie and his sister Lola, who is nearly five. As Charlie tells us:

I had no idea what the story was about – it didn’t seem to matter – I just kept writing. All the words were spoken by a child, a girl of perhaps seven. She spoke out of the book as if she was telling the reader all about her family, uninterrupted, unedited. Everything we learn about her family is filtered through her – what she says isn’t necessarily completely accurate, it’s just her take on things. Not so long ago – or maybe a lifetime ago, I can never tell – I couldn’t really work out what I should do with my life. I found myself paralysed with indecision. I looked around me and just about everybody else seemed to know exactly what they were up to. I had no idea. My problem was that I couldn’t seem to focus on just one thing. There were too many things Years of failure had taught me a lot. Even though every single publisher was saying “no”, I recognised from all the previous years of “no’s” that there was a difference – they were saying “no” but they slightly wanted to say “yes!” I could also see that compared to anything I had done before this was not bad – nothing about it was making me actually squirm She won a second Smarties Prize in 2002 for That Pesky Rat, which was commended for the Greenaway too. [12] [a] In the same year she wrote her first children's novel, Utterly Me, Clarice Bean, one of 39 books nominated by the librarians for the Carnegie Medal. [14] Her second novel in this series, Clarice Bean Spells Trouble was shortlisted for the 2005 British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year. The third novel, Clarice Bean, Don't Look Now was published in 2007. According to CCSU, some runners-up through 2002 were Commended (from 1959) or Highly Commended (from 1974). The high distinction was approximately annual from 1974, including Child and Chris Riddell for 1999. There were 99 commendations of both kinds in 44 years including those two for 1999, Child alone for 2002.

Clarice Bean series - Wikipedia

Charlie and Lola is a series of picture books made by Lauren Child and was later adapted into a children's TV show. Each half-hour format show contains two segments with different plots, each starting off with Charlie saying, "I have this little sister, Lola. She is small and very funny." Charlie was based on her boyfriend, Soren, who used to wear shirts just like Charlie's, but with his name on it. Lola was based on a pixie-looking girl Child saw on a train who was with her parents, a young couple, and kept bombarding them with questions. Soren Lorenson was based on Lauren's boyfriend's sister's "better" imaginary brother, and so Soren Lorenson became Lola's imaginary friend. A television series based on her Charlie and Lola books was made by Tiger Aspect for CBeebies, on which Child was an Associate Producer. Three series of 26 episodes and two specials were made. [15] Charlie and Lola has been sold throughout the world, and won BAFTAs in 2007 for Best children's Television Show and Best Script. [ citation needed] I have this little sister Lola. She is small and very funny.Sometimes I have to keep an eye on her.Sometimes Mum and Dad ask me to give her her dinner. This is a hard job because she is a very fussy eater.' ( I Will Not Ever, Never Eat A Tomato) My Uncle is a Hunkle, Says Clarice Bean - picture book - Clarice's parents have gone away and she is looked after by her Uncle.Child decided that each Charlie and Lola story would focus on the small, everyday issues that feature in the lives of young children and yet resonate with adults as well, such as likes and dislikes, envy and fear: Clarice Bean lebt mir ihren Geschwistern, Ohren Eltern und ihrem Opa zusammen. Sie freut sich sehr auf Weihnachten und ihr liebste Weihnachtslied ist "Zwölf Tage Weihnachten". Other characters who feature in the stories are Charlie’s best friend Marv (who lives in the flat downstairs) and his sausage dog, Sizzles; Lola’s best friend Lotta; and Lola’s imaginary friend, Soren Lorensen. Nonetheless, her style is unique - her illustrations (like her characters) are quirky, mischievous and multi-faceted, combining bright colours and bold, chunky outlines with photographic collages and ‘cut out’ images. The endearing quality of the illustrations is enhanced by Child’s perceptive detail, particularly with regard to facial expressions. The result - a juxtaposition of traditional children’s illustrations and contemporary artistic styles - is delightful and captivating for both young and old.
