Ultimately, it would be Waid's take on the Flash legacy and the Flash mythology that would make his run so great, but there was also a silver-age optimism matched with solid modern writing, and that's already on display here. Rob Liefeld offered Waid the opportunity to script Captain America over plots and artwork by his studio, but Waid declined.

I feel like Waid's run on The Flash may be just as important to the evolution of DC's sense of storytelling as Neil Gaiman's Dream Country and Frank Miller's Batman: Year One. The oversized 800th issues for THE FLASH and WONDER WOMAN will hit in June and set the stage for the recently-announced relaunches of both titles. In this first volume of a new series, Young Wally West is quickly in danger—not only from The Flash’s enemies, but from powers that he doesn’t know how to control!

In this first volume of a new series, Young Wally West is quickly in danger—not only from The Flash's enemies, but from powers that he doesn't know how to control! Legion of Super-Heroes, Secret Origins, and Wonder Woman, as well as various one-shots including Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. The book includes adventures between the Flash and various members of his Rogues Gallery, including a final story featuring The Trickster, who is always fun. And the New52 is a good place to jump on, especially if you like the tv show, and all in all the run by Francis Manupaul (which starts off the current series) was decent (starts rough but each new arc got progressively better), but its not anywhere close to being on the level of Waid or Johns. He didn’t give him a huge presence like a Batman, but he’s still very toned and muscular and it works so well.

Birthright contained several characters and elements from the Silver and Modern Age Superman comic books and homages to Superman: The Movie and the Smallville television series.IMPULSE, which was also by Waid, was tons of fun and for a while it was my favorite book being published. You should definitely read William Messner-Loebs' run before Waid's though, it creates many of the developments that Waid would work on later (although quite frankly, Messner-Loebs explored some of them in a much better way). Honestly though, I wasn’t left with any strong feelings at all - and I suspect it’s because I really don’t like the Flash as much as I thought I did. An essay posted on October 2, 2013, by Waid, titled "An Open Letter To Young Freelancers", [52] generated attention within the comics industry [53] [54] with The Hollywood Reporter describing it as "an important commentary on business practices that are in a state of flux at publishers both large and small.
