Description

The herbal and floral flavour of the Elixir is delivered through a combination of 130 aromatic flowers and plants, wonderful when enjoyed in sugared water. Chartreuse 1605 became the 400th Anniversary of the handing on the recipe of an elixir of life produced by Francois Hannibal d'Estrées to the cardeus monks in Vauvert.

The herbs and plants, whose composition is still a mystery, are carefully selected, precisely dosed in the alcohol obtained from home-produced wine and then distilled several times. Quite likely you will have to practice swallowing this substance as you will probably cough out loud as and when you inhale, whilst the Chartreuse is first drawn into ones mouth ! Chartreuse Elixier has been made by the Chartreuse monks since the 18th century, using the same recipe written in 1605. It is still produced and manufactured today by the Chartreux Fathers in their Aiguenoire distillery in Entre-Deux-Guiers (Isère - France). Not to everyone’s taste, but for those brave enough to approach with an open mind, this is a remarkable and delicious liqueur. There is so much alcohol in it that it evaporates on your tongue and need a syringe to extract it from the bottle. The sales of the liqueurs allow the Chartreuse Monks the funds necessary to survive in this commercial world and give to them the ability to dedicate their lives to prayer and meditation. The story begins in 1084, when the Dean of the University of Reims, Saint Bruno, went on a hiking with six companions. From real angelica to fresh lemon balm to classic mint, Chartreuse offers a unique and unmistakable combination of exquisite herbs.

Created as a medicine over 500 years ago by the Chartreuse monks in Vauvert, a small suberb of Paris, Green Chartreuse is the only green liqueur in the world that has a completely natural colour.
