It seems 5-10 years ago Bosch use to be the unquestioned king, but in the past 5 years of reviews, while Bosch still seems to top most charts I’ve seen more people saying the quality isn’t what it used to be. The see-through body of the canister allows you to see how much dust has collected so you can avoid blockage, and I found it remained largely transparent even after several uses.

Dewalt Variable-Speed Random Sander: Dewalt’s sander boasts a slightly bigger motor at 3 amps; offers spin speeds that range from 8,000 to 12,000 OPMs; and weighs less than Bosch’s model at just 2. With the more powerful motor, there was no stalling with my vacuum with the tool collar fully open or closed. I suppose this Bosch would also work as an aggressive machine as well, I just use it for finishing, and it does an awesome job. I have been operating like this with other sanders anyway – they don’t stall, but to reduce the likely hood of swirlies.

According to the Bosch FAQ section, Bosch blue products carry a twelve-months-from-date-of-purchase warranty. Anchored into the back of the sander, just above the circular body, is the microfilter dust canister that twists off for easy cleaning or to attach the device to a vacuum hose via the included adapter. While an orbital sander works fine for finishing, the random orbit sander is superior, in that it allows you to do heavy material removal, as well as finishing. If you don’t want to spend five to nine hundred dollars, but still want a top notch sander with minimal vibration, the Bosch GEX 125-150 AVE is for you.

I did find myself wanting an additional handle for balance, but that may be more personal preference and what I’m used to. After running the sander across our ceiling to address old paint, plaster, and drywall, the circular edge of the pad was harder to separate than it was when sanding flat surfaces that distributed the rotation and pressure across the diameter of the sanding disc. With a comfortable soft grip top and body design, this tool has variable speed control from between 7500 and 12,000 opm to match the speed to the task. Yes, it’s still relatively messy work, but it’s a far cry better than the sawdust that would be kicked up from hand-sanding, and it also assures that you won’t breathe in a lot of particulate. However, had I known about this when I bought my Makita BO5041, I would have absolutely bought this instead – its lighter, has proper sized dust collection port built, and performs at least as well.Because the GEX’s sanding discs attach to the sander via Velcro (hook and loop fastening), you speed through different grits quicker than a Mustang racing a little old lady with a walking stick.
