The Need to Know, a photo book, is my exploration of the meager details that emerged from brief and cryptic conversations with my father and my curiosity about Cold War espionage and its impact upon my family at the time.

BOB DYLAN: MIXING UP THE MEDICINE is an unprecedented glimpse into the creative life of one of America’s most groundbreaking, influential and enduring artists. The images by Lee, a first generation Chinese American, show an intimate portrayal of daily life in the American South that is considered to be among the most remarkable in the last half century.

Instead, he helps us cultivate our own the same way he did: by developing an affinity for a people and wanting more for them than what their lives are offering.A new book—the first-ever collection of Lee’s work—and a solo exhibition in New York make the case that he is one of the great overlooked luminaries of American picture-making.

From there, his portraits and lifestyle photos were published all over the world, in pretty much every major magazine and media out there, including The New York Times, BBC, National Geographic and more. A followup exhibition has just opened at Joseph Bellows Gallery, which hosted an online show of Lee’s in the early months of the pandemic. I went to a public school that only had two non- Chinese students, even though this was New York,” Lee says, speaking from his home in Nashville, Tennessee. Not only did Lee have the good fortune to study under two 20th century titans, they represented nearly polar extremes in philosophy and visual style, providing the aspiring acolyte a broad spectrum of influence.A new book—the first-ever collection of [Baldwin] Lee’s work—and a solo exhibition in New York make the case that he is one of the great overlooked luminaries of American picture-making. Here and there, though, a few portraits seem to carry a subtle metaphorical charge: a young man in shorts and T-shirt, his hand outstretched above him to grasp a coiled rope dangling from a tree; four young children holding hands beneath an ominously towering federal courthouse that looms out of the encroaching darkness. The new discoveries should come as no surprise because I had not made proofs of ninety-eight percent of the pictures I took. Baldwin Lee , published by Hunters Point Press, is a collection of 88 black-and-white photographs, mainly portraits.

Must-See Photography Books of 2022: The first collection of remarkable work, made in the 1980s in the American South, by a Chinese-American photographer who, under the influence of Walker Evans, saw his Black subjects with an inherently incisive and compassionate eye. Look very closely at what you don’t want to see, at whom you fail to recognise and celebrate as your own. His work centered on people living ''outside of time'' with traditional jobs and skills that had been passed down through generations. The travelling, the cheap hotels, the long days drenched in sweat, the fact that I had very little money. Second, he says he woke up one day to find himself on the wrong side of the line that separates witness from voyeur. It is understandable why Lee stopped, but even his sense of justice and love of a great subject do not explain why he started – or why he kept going. MS Was it then never your intention to share this work with others in a large way, not even in your thirties?
