When it reopened in 1878, the Ledaig deeds and ownership were passed from pillar to post before closing for a second time in 1930, as there was a drop in the demand for whisky due to prohibition in the United States. Nose: Right off the bat there’s a big wave of savoury, almost meaty peat smoke, with undertones of malty marmite.

I had to nose to see how the liquid presence remained and there was lemon meringue pie, a touch of cold honey glazed ham with burnt twigs. A peated Hebridean style Single Malt Scotch that is presented non chill-filtered, rich and smoky sherry notes are balanced with seaweed and light creosote in the mouth, before a long smoky finish with liquorice and sea spray notes. Comment: There is a good balance between savoury and sweet, the coastal character of the whisky is clear, it reminds me of bonfires on the beach.A wonderfully smoky island Single Malt, Ledaig 18 showcases sweet, floral aromas and balances them perfectly with a richness and warmth of sea salt and smoke. There’s still so much I have yet to try and I get a bit overwhelmed at what my next whisky purchase will be.
