Now, I can see why it'd have been marketed as such, but out there are many people who'll also be pushed away by this, as I was. And she meets a man different from any she has ever encountered — a white man dressed like a Native American, tall and lean and unsettling in his blunt honesty. The Wilderness book series by Sara Donati includes books Into the Wilderness, Dawn on a Distant Shore, Lake in the Clouds, and several more. The reference to these characters is very brief and matter-of-fact, and it doesn't have any bearing on the rest of the story. And she fails to follow the one rule that is critical when you are at the beginning of a long book that is part of a longer series following the same characters.

and into the heart of a forbidden affair between an unconventional Englishwoman and an American frontiersman. It's long but interesting and the characters leap off the page but somewhere midpoint this book just didn't resonate with me the way I expected it to.Y., after a sheltered life in England with her titled aunt, she means to live with her father, Alfred, a judge, and her wastrel brother, Julian, and teach school. She joins her father at his holdings in Paradise and quickly discovers that plans have already been made for her.

Maybe if I hadn't already been spoiled by the greatness of the Outlander Series I would have enjoyed this more. To my utter delight, Into the Wilderness proved itself a most enjoyable read, containing all of the necessary ingredients required for a good historical fiction with romantic elements. Especially because "The Gilded Hour" follows a later generation of the characters in "Into the Wilderness. Elizabeth tried to drop her head but he put a finger under her chin to lift it and looked her directly in the eye.

As autumn approaches, news of the latest conflict with Britain finds the young men of Paradise—including eighteen-year-old Daniel Bonner—eager to take up arms.

Elizabeth persuades the judge to sign over the deed of ownership, and instead of marrying Todd she slips away and marries Nathaniel. I found myself comparing it too much to DG's writing at first which was a mistake - they are very different authors and once I leared to appreciate Donati's style and prose and let go of my DG obsession (I bring this to every book I read! The novel follows the adventures of Elizabeth and Nathaniel, as they elope, flee together into the Mohawk lands, and try to stay one step ahead of Nathaniel's arch-rival, Richard Todd. The production and narration is outstanding of this very well written book, looking forward to the next in the series. Nathaniel’s hands tightened on her upper arms until she gave in and looked up, and then he held on to her gaze and refused to let her look away. Set in a remote, mountainous New York village, in a United States that has only just won its independence, Into the Wilderness is the story of Elizabeth Middleton, recently of England.
