The next part of the book is watching Tiger go from home to home while in the middle of mourning a mother she loved dearly, but barely knew.

I want to break things so the world looks like how I feel inside: splintered into a million bloody and sharp pieces. It reminded me of when I was grieving for my furbabies Tasha and Lilly, my bird Woody, Grandma, and Pop Pop. The story talks about grief, friendships, family relationships, foster care and all kinds of domestic violence. We didnt need the ranch scene, especially since it did very little to show her mother’s love of horses. It never goes away because when you lose someone you lose some parts of yourselves and you turn into a different person. My heart breaks every time I think about where she’s placed right now and I hope, I can only pray that she’s not alone wherever she really is.

She rubbed ointment on me, made sure I showered, made sure I took my medicine and she did it every single time I was sick.Kathleen Glasgow is unflinching in the face of pain and we could all stand to learn how to make friends with the dark.

it was heartfelt, real and powerful, but i felt no connection to the characters and i just wasn’t interested in the story; i had no desire to continue. It was shocking to see her, how she dwindled down to nearly nothing, but I can imagine how much pain she must be feeling. Glasgow uses Tiger's gaze to look not only inward at her own grief, but through a wider lens to account for other kinds of grief, loss and pain too. throughout the book, she goes through a series of events she never would have gone through if not for her mother’s death, including foster care, and she must learn to make friends with the dark before it swallows her whole. In Kathryn Glasgow's How to Make Friends with the Dark, 16-year-old Tiger learns that her mother is dead, and almost equally upsetting, she can't even go somewhere familiar to stay while she figures out how to adjust to being an orphan; with no known father or other relatives, she is relegated to the legal responsibility of the state of Arizona and uprooted from the life and the people she knew.
