I had the real privilege on 14th July 2017 of touring their beautiful distillery in Bushmills town centre, up close to the Antrim coast – a "bucket list" moment of mine.

Officially launched in 1784, although whisky had been produced on the site for at least 150 years prior, this is one of the industry's oldest and most respected names. The story of Bushmills started back in 1608 when they were given a license to distil and in 1784 the old Bushmills distillery is made official. The year 2011 and still they are growing in popularity with Bon Iver, Elijah Wood and Chromeo all becoming ambassadors for the brand.A favourite whiskey of many years; and even if unintentional, Bushmills 10 Years Old is probably as near a benchmark as I'll admit to having. The palate is effortlessly smooth, melted chocolate, honey and vanilla flavours are all present thanks to ex-Bourbon and Sherry cask ageing.

The flagship bottling is the Bushmills Original , which is a blend of grain and malt whiskies, and made to a pre-prohibition recipe. On the palate, mellow sweet notes of vanilla, milk chocolate and fresh honeysuckle married with delicate traces of toasted oak. Initial accents of zesty citrus fruits intertwined with the distinctive Bushmills honey character, followed by lingering sweet aromas of fresh vanilla and creamy milk chocolate. It uses a combination of peated and unpeated malt, which is triple distilled before being aged in mainly ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks.
