Of course there is always plastic surgery, but I don’t think the everyday female hero is going to go out and get a boob job just to look good in some tights, plus most of their personalities don’t fit the type of person who would go and get plastic surgery.

I like the way most of them look, and I think women should be curvy but sometimes it can go a little overboard, and if I have to stuff my bra with a whole box of tissue just to cosplay as my favorite comic character I may rethink my costume choice. The first argument I would disagree with because you can’t really have a “iconic look” on a character as subpar as Power Girl has been for most of her existence (though in all fairness, DC has done well with her in the past decade or so).I love Conan comics and in the 70s and 80s they could publish naked boobs on the covers and in the comics (adult non CC versions). Sometimes he gazes into the void and witnesses the end of all life and gets really deep and metaphysical. I want my wife to enjoy comics with me but it won’t happen while the industry continues to promote outrageously drawn women.

That may because Power Girl always sat in the middle of the sort-of famous DC heroes like Green Arrow, the Kyle Rayner GL, and Red Tornado. One was the anger over the change to such an “iconic look” and the other was lauding/deriding DC for using a wardrobe change to try to make her a more serious female character. Most superhero comics (at least traditionally) are written for a male audience, a heterosexual male audience. To be honest, some pre-code titles argued that crime did not pay, because the bad guys were always caught, but at the same time these very same comics taught readers how to strategize and plan those crimes – and where the strategy and planning went wrong.

The cover scene may be manipulated to unnecessarily reveal a heroine’s, villain’s or victim’s breast (or breasts) to the viewer. Perhaps the casual comic fan might not know that much about Power Girl, like that she’s the Supergirl of an alternate Earth (it was Earth-2 before the relaunch, I don’t know what it is now) and sort of a cousin to Superman…I think.I found that when the muscles started growing on the male comic characters, the boobs grew on the female ones. I can’t even read my digital comics at work during break without looking over my shoulder after getting too many rude comments from coworkers who glance over just as I turn the page and get a full page smack in the face of a big breasted super-heroine. Since that period, she’s had trouble not only shaking off the identity, but establishing a new one in its place. I think what this may reflect is that there are fewer anonymous female figures on covers and that more attention is now paid to who they are, not just their boobs. Drawing bigger muscles fed the fantasy of who the reader wanted to be, drawing bigger boobs fed the fantasy of who the reader wanted to be with.
