Description

is a slow burn thriller that does take a while to pick up pace but there is enough intrigue there to keep you turning the pages.

Mind you, don't even get me started on husband, Jack (as in Hit the Road if Mary's got any sense - she hasn't). McGowan does a good job ramping up the suspense as the good intentions of two people unable to sleep turn into a quest for justice. When I had read 50% of this book I was ready to give up, but then it did start to get interesting and I was fully immersed in the story that was unfolding but lo and behold the book had finished. Reading about breast feeding, crying children, food being thrown, and dirty nappys always bores me to tears as a woman who is childless by choice. And life becomes a constant revolving door of meeting each childs' needs one after the other after the other after the other. The police aren’t making time for Mary and Tim, so they decide to take matters into their own hands and try to solve a crime.

She ran the UK's first MA in crime writing for five years, and regularly teaches and talks about writing. One thing to know about these two, because it will be repeated incessantly for the first quarter of the book: They’re tired. With the waking world too harsh, too cold, and hard to navigate, Tim and Mary join forces at night and begin to look into a crime they aren't even certain they saw. The police don’t believe them, but when they hear of a potential link to an old murder and a string of disappearances from the area, pressure mounts to find her before it’s too late.

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. They see news reports of a missing woman who was last seen in this area and become convinced m the woman hey saw is her.

There were times that Mary’s questioning left me unsettled because her thoughts weren’t indicative of her career mindset. As the pair are drawn into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, the culprit appears to be even closer to home than they thought. The book really entertains the reader with the who did it, did they actually do it premise and I will read more in future!Mary and Tim soon realise this this is a very complex case and the culprit could be more close to home than they thought. Unfortunately, this just didn't grab my attention in a meaningful way, so I ended up putting it down at 11%. This is a wickedly clever premise that features a mother of two (Mary) who is on maternity leave and of course like every mother needs a good night's Sleep. While I enjoyed some of the OTT moments, I feel like it would’ve worked better if the book was aiming to be a darkly comedic mystery. Just when we think we have it figured out, there are more twists and turns, and the drama surrounding them all intensifies.
