So when her missing cat is rescued by Anna, who works several jobs to support herself, Emily is receptive to Anna’s offer to help. We’re introduced to Emily who is 5 foot 3 (my name is Emily and I’m also 5 foot 3, weird) and her husband, Simon. I loved getting to know more about her past, and I was finally able to make that vital connection between Emily and Anna. As time goes on, Anna seems to know more than she should about Emily, who is having marriage difficulties.

I couldn’t fault how the author approached any of the topics in this book; she does so with such depth, such attention to detail that it’s impossible not to feel things so strongly, impossible to not let these things stick in your mind. The characters were also thinly drawn, quote two dimensional and certainly not as complex, engaging and interesting as those in her other books. There was a very emotional scene as time went on, the kind that leaves you with a lump in your throat and that general feeling of sadness. I just wished Emily’s husband (or anyone) would see things from her point of view, to protect her and to reassure her when things got too much.

My previous novels have been published to glowing reviews, translated into many languages and have ranked in the Nielsen bestseller chart.

I do prefer the author's previous work but this is still a strong addition to this genre and I'd recommend it. I love being totally absorbed in a book, and so far, this story wasn’t letting me down in the slightest! Susan Elliot Wright is the bestselling author of five novels, including the acclaimed The Flight of Cornelia Blackwood. Penny Hancock, author of The Choice'An unnerving, suspenseful study of what it truly means to mother and build family ties. After those few pages, I closed the book there and then for about 5 minutes to process it all and to ponder just how these events would link to the main story. This is such a dark and emotional read and i certainly wasn't prepared for how emotionally tied I would be to the characters. When a strange woman turns up on Emily’s doorstep with their lost cat, she doesn’t think anything of it. There's an immediate bond between the two women, especially as Emily's old friends have drifted off since Bonnie was born, and it's not long before they are meeting for coffee and lunch, and Anna becomes something of a confidante to Emily. Plus Emily’s husband was seeing someone else when they met and there are those who don’t believe leopards change their spots fuelling her insecurities.

As much as I was nervous about what was to come, it was an amazing feeling – the atmosphere had been perfectly written and I instantly had some terrifying predictions for what could happen to round this story off.Emily is also concerned that Simon might be having an affair so Simon thinks Emily is just being paranoid. I wasn’t mentally prepared for how much I became emotionally invested in these characters and their complex lives! I absolutely love Susan Elliot Wright's novels and so was thrilled to have the opportunity to read this advance copy.

Though Anna was a wrong’un, I completely felt for her and all she had been through, her POV enables you tho understand the why to her behaviours. The author consistently kept my attention on the book, the questions starting to pile up in my mind. Anna is certainly a character that the reader will feel sorry for and her actions are clearly as a result of the trauma and rejection she has faced. It was truly excellent to see just how well Emily’s character worked and I was really excited to see how things changed for her throughout the book.
