To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It is also a story about how problems are easier to solve together and communities that work with a positive common goal can be very powerful. It was the second module on the course and it’s when I started to think about sequences and how a few images could tell a story.

You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods. By simplifying the colour palette and just adding two colours to draw the attention to the water as the main focus of the book and the yellow tail of the tamarin monkey who conducts the story and being the one who knew how to fix the problem from the beginning. They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated! It’s a very intense three months where the only thing to do is to draw from life, draw, draw and draw. Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example. This is an important story, cleverly told and beautifully drawn, say the judges, full of little details that allow children to explore its world, even if they can’t yet read the story.

Eventually, the flood water reaches a height that they can no longer ignore and they have to work together to save their city. It's also quite re-readable - on a second read through you appreciate the stoat/weasel/otter (not quite sure what he is) trying to get everyone's attention throughout the book to tell them what's going on. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. One of the comments you made in a video was about how the story began with a hippo leaving the taps on. This page is an allegory to the attitudes we have seen towards climate change over the years, and it only seems to becoming a more pressing issue as more and more people are adversely affected, through droughts, wildfires etc.

I have bought copies of the book to share with friends who are teachers as this is the kind of book my primary classes would have loved me to read to them. Your words, like your reviews, bring books to life and give them a voice before the front cover is even turned. Can I be cheeky and ask for a tour of your workspace - it was great to get a snippet from your video. I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! Former Klaus Flugge Prize judge, Senior Lecturer in Education: Primary English and Children's Literature, Mat Tobin interviewed Mariajo about her book.

There is an image, based on the Oxford Circus print, where a panda bear was talking with a tiger on the tube platform, blaming the politicians about what was happening. Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first. While we watch the growing distress of the smaller animals, we’re aware that there’s a sort of inverted pride in this inattention.
